Just
the one change to the starting line up this week sees Fran Cortes start,
replacing Abraham, who drops to the bench. In front of an excellent crowd and in
the searing heat of the Carranza it was pretty clear from the start that the
visitors had come to try and take a point from the match by getting numbers
behind the ball. This did allow Cadiz to show some good one touch football from
the back and through midfield but by and large the attacks were too ponderous
and the only danger seemed to come from the many corners that Cadiz had in the
first 20 minutes or so. From one such corner taken by Caballero from the right
Fragoso glided the ball goalwards but Jauregui, the Real union keeper, managed
to block the effort and the ball was scrambled away. At the other end Casilla
was a virtual spectator until the 24th minute when Real Union broke down the
right and the ball was crossed into the middle and it appeared to hit Quero on
the arm, with the whole preferencia shouting as one ´mano´ (hands), but
neither the linesman or the referee saw anything untoward, and the ball fell
nicely for Abasolo to smash the ball past a helpless Casilla to put the visitors
a goal up, rather luckily and against the run of play. Going ahead this meant
that the visitors were going to put even more numbers between the ball and their
goal and Cadiz were unable to make any headway from open play and were only
seeming to get the ball in the area from a free kick or a corner but again
without causing that much danger and there was little variance to either the
free kicks or the corners, which meant that the Real Union were able to pretty
comfortably able to snuff out and potential danger from Cadiz. That however all
changed in the 36th minute when, at last, they tried something different,
Caballero played the ball short to Lopez Silva, who swerved in field before
firing the ball over to the back post where Fran Cortes was free and he headed
the ball down and goalwards and this time Jauregui could only flap at the ball
and it bounced into the goal to make it all square.
The
second half started in much the same vein as the first with los amarillos
playing the ball well from the back but were really not causing the visiting
defense any real problems. Then in the 61st minute Cristian burst down the right
wing and went down, a touch theatrically, under a challenge by Gurrutxaga and
the referee gave the free kick. Finally los amarillos played the ball quickly,
Cristian to Lopez Silva who put over a great cross for Ogbeche to fire in a
super header that left Jauregui rooted to the spot to make it 2-1 to Cadiz. With
the clock running down the visitors started opening out looking to get back on
terms and this meant that plenty of open spaces were available for both teams to
run into and suddenly the game had taken on a completely different feel to the
previous hour. Just eight minutes later Cadiz broke quickly and the ball was
played forward to the right edge of the box where Ogbeche sprinted to and put a
great ball square into the middle where Lopez Silva had made ground to slot the
ball home but an excellent interception by Alcala who smashed the ball
behind for another corner for Cadiz, which was easily dealt with. At the Cadiz
end Salcedo and Brit both had a half chance but Casilla was up to the challenge
of both and los amarillos stayed ahead. With just 10 minutes left to hold out
the visitors were given a boost when Lopez Silva managed to get himself sent off
when he was holding the ball after a free kick had been awarded to Cadiz and
Gurrutxaga looked to be holding the little Cadiz winger, who then turned to try
and get free with the Real Union collapsing as if he had been poleaxed. The
referee immediately brandished a red card to the Cadiz player, who really is a
very good player but he should cut out his own rather theatrical dives and
concentrate on doing what he does best, which is taking the opposition on,
creating and scoring goals. With a one man advantage the visitors were looking
dangerous and those final minutes plus the 4 added on seemed a life time to the
cadistas, who never stopped their barrage of support for their team. In fact the
clearest chance of those final minutes went to Cadiz when Cristian burst out
from the back and played the ball forward to Ormazabal who raced beyond the
final man towards the goal and into the box and was then clattered by the keeper
and the ball ran free to Nano who was following up but the keeper had recovered
and managed to push his effort behind for a corner. Thankfully the referee blew
for to end the match and Cadiz picked up another three points that should see
them start climbing up the table.
