Week 9 Alaves 0

v

0 Cadiz
30th October 2005
Pellegrino Bezares
Fleurquin

Victor Esparrago rested several first teamer’s at the Estadio Mendizorroza and saw his team come away with a point. Berizzo, De La Cuesta, Mario Silva, Bezares and Ivan Ania started with regulars Suarez, Paz, Sesma and Raul Lopez on the bench.

The match was a game of two halves, Cadiz controlling the first, and Alaves coming back into it in the second half with Armando having to be in fine form, although his defence coped admirably.

Fleurquin, who looked to redeem a very average performance in the Calderon against Atletico Madrid, and Bezares, controlled the early exchanges in the middle of the park and Cadiz grew from this. Most of the threat came from the left, where Mario Silva and Ivan Ania linked well in the absence of the dependable Jonathan Sesma. Although they had much of the ball, Cadiz didn’t really create a chance until the 25th minute, when Enriques fine header produced a superb save from Costanzo. Pavoni’s blocked shot then fell to Enrique, but he was offside. After good work with Oli, Pavoni then had the best chance of the half but he pulled his left footed shot across goal.

The second half started and Cadiz dropped further and further back with every Alaves attack. Esparrago looked to preserve the point that would have kept Cadiz above Alaves, but the plan nearly failed in the 55th minute. Many home fans were celebrating as Aloisi headed goalwards, but Armando produced a magnificent save to keep the scores level. Aloisi’s next chance came in the 74th minute, and in a carbon copy his header was saved by the again impressive Armando. Esparrago could see Alaves were looking for a winner, and introduced Paz to tighten up the centre of defence. He and his team-mates held firm to take the point, and the Andalucians were certainly the happier at the final whistle.
