The
only change to the starting line up this week sees Cifuentes return after injury
to replace Raul Lopez. In front of an excellent Madrid crowd the home team
started strongly but without really causing any problems to Casilla or the Cadiz
defence however gradually los amarillos started getting back into the it to make
for a really good game. The danger from Cadiz came in the shape of Lopez Silva,
who thus far this season has shown a willingness to have a go at goal and twice
he came close, first he got to a cross from Cristian but headed against the post
and then he managed to latch onto a loose ball but the effort went through to
Cobeño, the Rayo keeper. Then Erice burst forward into an unusually high
attacking position to fire a shot off on goal but it was off target, shortly
afterwards Ogbeche had an effort on target but it fell into the hands of Cobeño,
after the keeper had slipped. In the 37th minute the deadlock was broken when
the ball was played sweetly through the Cadiz defence to the feet of Castro, who
had got a yard on Fragoso and the Rayo forward controlled the ball well and
slipped beyond a helpless Casilla to make it 1-0. After the goal the initial
reactions from Cadiz were not great and desperation seemed to be setting in but
thankfully there wasn´t that much time left to half time and maybe Gracia would
be able to change the fortunes of the visitors around.
Immediately
at the start of the second half the Cadiz trainer put on the more attacking,
Fran Cortes, to replace Abraham, who has looked good at times but rarely creates
that much danger. It was clear that Gracia had also given the team a good
talking to and they came out strongly from the start of the half. It was not
going to be long until Cadiz were back on even terms when in the 51st minute
Cristian crossed from the right and as Enrique jumped with a defender the ball
ran loose behind him and Ogbeche swiftly hooked the ball in with his right to
make it 1-1. Los amarillos continued to look comfortable on the ball and both
sides were passing the ball around well with neither side getting that close to
goal but that was to change just ten minutes later when, the very impressive,
Michel picked up the ball in the centre of the park and played a couple of
one twos as he raced forward and played another one collecting the ball in the
Cadiz area with just Casilla to beat and he coolly dummied to shoot putting the
Cadiz keeper on the floor before slotting the ball home to make it 2-1. A very
resilient Cadiz today were not in the mood to give up and conytinued pressing
the home team and just eight minutes later Lopez Silva clipped a great cross
over from the left, which should really have been dealt with by the home defence
but instead it was Ogbeche who leapt well to nod the ball past Cobeño to make
it 2-2. There was still time for plenty of excitement as, with the teams tiring,
spaces were opening up and in the final seconds Cristian went down in the Rayo
area after a challenge from Albacar, that could have been viewed as a penalty
shout but the Rayo player reacted badly to Cristians claims for a penalty and
went head to head with the Cadiz right back when he was still on his knees and
appeared to make a movement downwards with his head and Cristian collapsed
clutching his head, rather too theatrically, but the referee had no doubt that
the Rayo´s players antics deserved a second yellow and so the home team were
down to ten men as the final whistle went just seconds later. An excellent
display from both sides saw the points shared and if Cadiz can continue playing
as they have done against the high flying teams as they have done in the last
two weeks they should start climbing up the table,
Next week the game at the Carranza against Real Union de Irun kicks off on
Sunday, 25th October at 17.00.
