Ten man Cadiz were within 3 minutes of a much needed home win against fellow preseason promotion favourites Alaves. Cadiz lined up with Bezares in midfield behind Garcia, Nano, Sergio and Sesma, who were supporting last weeks goal hero De Paula.

Both teams started the game well, with Astudillo and De Lucas looking dangerous for the visitors, along with the Nigerian Ogbeche, whose pace and power caused a constant menace throughout the game. The main men for the home side looked to be Nano and Sesma, who often linked well in the space behind the Alaves defence and midfield. In the 18th minute good linkup between Sesma, Caneda and Nano down the right led to confusion in the Alaves area, and Coromina ended up putting the ball past  his own keeper, Bonano.  The goal settled the home side, and Sergio was involved in almost all of the attacking moves they strung together – with De Paula proving the main beneficiary. The Cafiz defence coped easily, although the power of Ogbeche looked like it may cause problems at some stage,

Neither manager changed their teams at half time, and the match continued in a similar vein. Nano took over from Sergio as the most likely to extend the lead.  The visitors introduced De Jandro, Aloisi and Gabri in search of the equaliser, whilst Oli introduced Velazquez for Sergio when changing to a back five, and  Acuna, who’s return from injury was a welcome boost for the home crowd. De Quintana was then sent off for a second yellow card. To add insult to injury in the 87th minute as a probable foul against the home defence was missed by the referee, Astudillo slotted home from the edge of the box to earn the 2000/01 UEFA cup finalists a draw.

The home side were disappointed with the result but the performance was better than has been seen in the Carranza lately, and hopefully the trip to Albacete this Sunday will be rewarded with 3 points
