GAME
Only
two changes to the starting line up from last weeks victorious eleven sees
Enrique and Lopez Silva both return after injury to replace Velasco and Nano
respectively. In front of the best crowd of the season thus far in the Carranza
it was a very lively Cadiz that looked as if they were going to romp home
against a Cartagena team who were also promoted from the Segunda B. With just
two minutes into the game Lopez Silva was causing all sorts of problems to the
visitors right back and he clipped a shot over with his right foot that floated
agonisingly onto the roof of the net with Ruben, the Cartagena keeper looking
beaten. Within the first half an hour it was one way traffic with los amarillos
creating chance after chance with the best one falling to Caballero who was
played in on the edge of the area but he took one touch too many and that
allowed Ruben to race out and block his eventual effort. The Cartagena keeper
was also called to action to fairly easily deal with shots on target from Lopez
Silva twice, Enrique and he did well to get down and turn aside a good shot from
Abraham. Ogbeche also had a couple of headers after crosses from the left that
he guided a couple of yards wide of the far post. Just after the half hour mark
and the match was turned on its head and Cadiz were behind thanks, in no small
measure, to the referee, Antonio Pérez Riverol. Raul Lopez was racing down the
left wing and was down near the Cartagena corner flag when he was tackled by
Txiki and the ball went off for a throw to the visitors and the two players had
a slight altercation. As Raul Lopez ran back to get into position the referee
called him back to talk to him and Txiki and as the Cadiz left back started back
again the man with the whistle called him back again this time to shake hands
with his opponent. As soon as that had been done he allowed play to resume with
Cartagena taking the throw in with Raul Lopez doing his utmost to regain his
defensive position but the visitors had spotted the open space and the ball was
played quickly through the middle and up to Toche, who was a good yard ahead of
a tiring Raul Lopez, and he raced into the Cadiz box unchallenged before firing
in a low right foot shot that went through the legs of Casilla to make it 0-1 to
the visitors. After the goal both Cartagena and Cadiz looked like
different teams with the visitors playing some really slick football and los
amarillos chasing around like headless chickens picking up stupid yellow cards.
If Cadiz could hold out until half time maybe Gracia would be able to get the
team back together and they could still take the match, but with the very final
kick of the half the lead was doubled when the ball was played through Raul
Lopez to De Lucas, in the box, who managed to turn inside a despairing Fragoso
before firing home a left foot shot in a repeat of the earlier shot from his
strike partner, Toche, when the ball went through the legs of Casilla to make it
0-2.
Worse
was to follow when just two minutes into the second half with all eleven Cadiz
players defending a corner the ball was flicked on at the front post and then
nodded in at the back post by Victor to make it 0-3 to the visitors. Once again
the visitors in the Newcastle colours were stroking the ball around at pace and
closing Cadiz down swiftly and it was looking as if it could be a rout with los
amarillos going to be lucky to end with all eleven players on the pitch as more
yellow cards followed. Gradually however los amarillos regained the ascendancy
and started powering forward throwing their all at trying to get back into the
match but despite all the effort rarely was Ruben called into the action. With a
little more than ten minutes to go it was Toedtli who showed his younger
counterparts how to finish when Lopez Silva collected the ball near the byeline
and slipped the ball inside to the Cadiz centre who coolly dummied to shoot with
his right before dragging the ball on to his left and firing the ball into the
roof of the net from short range to make it 1-3. A couple of minutes later and
Fran Cortes was free at the back post with a great chance to narrow the lead but
he skied the difficult chance high over the bar, then Lopez Silva tried a long
shot that was well wide of the mark and Toedtli had the ball taken off his head
by Ruben as he leapt to try and convert another cross and so the game finished
1-3 with Cadiz picking up their second home defeat of the season after such a
promising start to the game. Cartagena were the best team seen at the Carranza
so far this season and it would be no surprise to see them challenging for
promotion by the end of the year.
