Under fire manager Oli saw Cadiz return to winning ways after four defeats in five games with a much needed 1-0 win against lowly Hercules. With Acuna and Lobos still missing through injury, Medina, Pavoni and Bezares dropped to the bench which meant that Miguel Garcia, Sergio and Fleurquin started in midfield with Sesma and Nano supporting De Paula up front. A much improved defensive performance saw Cesar Caneda, normally more at home at the centre of defence, slot in at right back in place of Velazquez, with captain Paz partnering De Quintana in front of Armando.

The match started reasonably quietly, although Hercules did see plenty of the ball. Their game plan looked to be to use the pace of Quique Mateo and Juanlu on the wings, who would then try and create chances for their danger man upfront, Moises. Hercules enjoyed most of the early possession without really threatening Armando’s goal,  but the game was turned on its head when the visitors took the lead in the 24th minute. Miguel’s inch perfect pass found Sesma on the left, and the wingers cross was turned in by De Paula for his second league goal of the season. The sense of relief was instantly evident on the bench, the pitch, and in the stands with over a hundred cadistas making the journey east. The team settled and Miguel Garcia and Sergio were impressive in controlling the game in the middle of the park. The sides exchanged a couple of half chances each but the half time whistle sounded with the yellows goal lead still intact.

With temperatures soaring in to the thirties, both managers used their full quota of substitutions in the second half. The 5,000 home fans became frustrated with the home side and this seemed to rub off on the players, much to the benefit of Cadiz. As the home side failed to find any rhythm, the match started ticking away towards a much needed three points for Cadiz. Lucas, Bezares and Enrique came on to strengthen the midfield for Sergio, Nano and Sesma respectively. In the 80th minute Hercules were handed a lifeline when Fleurquin was sent off for a second booking, but despite chances for Tote, Montenegro and Moises, the visitors stood firm to record their second away win of the season.

After the disappointing run, it is still encouraging to see that although Cadiz sit a lowly 14th in the table, they are only six points behind early pace setters and neighbours Xerez. Next up is the home match with Alaves, in what promises to be a tight game between two of the relegated sides from last year.
