Cadiz
secured their second away victory of the season with an impressive win in
Barcelona against Espanyol. 20,000 fans, including 500 cadistas, watched the
game played in the Estadio Olímpico Lluis Companys.
De La Cuesta came in for the injured Abraham Paz, Bezares started in midfield
instead of Fleurquin, and Medina retained his place up front despite the return
to the squad of captain Oli.
The first half began and ended
in a flash. Neither team looked capable of creating chances and neither
goalkeeper was called upon to make a save. It appeared that both teams would be
content with 0-0, the home side showing a lack of enterprise in the final third
of the pitch, and Cadiz relying on long balls over the full-backs for Sesma and
Enrique, but unfortunately they rarely found their intended target.
In the first two minutes of the
second half there was more action than the whole of the previous 45. Firstly
Enrique found himself through on goal, but as the defenders raced back he
managed to get a shot away at goal which Kameni saved and pushed wide for a
corner. Both managers had obviously decided that a point was not really going to
do either side many favours, especially Espanyol, and the game started to
stretch a little. Cadiz started to see more of the ball, and certainly looked
more likely to open the scoring, and their dominance was further help when
Estoyanoff came on with little over half an hour to play. The breakthrough for
the visitors eventually came twenty minutes into the second half. Raul Lopez
managed to put Sesma through down the left wing, and the winger got to the
byline before squaring to Pavoni who's outstretched leg diverted the ball home
to the delight of the travelling fans. Espanyol pushed further forward, but as
Cadiz coped at the back, substitute Oli's cross was just flicked away from
Medina by Kameni as the visitors looked to seal the win. They did that in the
80th minute, in a carbon copy of the first goal. This time Estoyanoff got to the
byline, this time on the right, and his pull back was prodded home by Sesma. The
cadistas jumped for joy as the disgruntled home fans started leaving in their
droves. This was a superb away performance from Cadiz, and now the fans will be
hoping they can now start turning home draws into wins, when they entertain
Bilbao on Sunday.
