After two successive defeats on the road Cadiz worryingly made it 3 league losses on the trot in front of 18,000 home fans. Without the injured Acuna and more importantly Lobos, much was made in the local media about which formation and players Oli should choose to best accommodate his players, but one thing was clear after the first 45 minutes, it wasn’t the one which started on Saturday. Armando played behind Velazquez, De Quintana, Paz and Raul Lopez – the defence that was so solid in the promotion season of 2004/05 but looked very wobbly on Saturday. Bezares and Fleurquin played in midfield, with Sesma, Pavoni and De Paula supporting Medina in attack.

The visitors came with a plan to keep it tight in defence and hope for a goal on the break, and after ten minutes they got their reward after a slow start to the game. A long punt down field saw Armando race to the edge of his box and head clear. Bezares couldn’t get to the loose ball, and it was poked through to Natalio who volleyed well past Armando. 0-1 after ten minutes after yet more sloppy defending – just the start Oli must have dreaded. Even after what should have been an early wake-up call, the home side could find no rhythm in their play. Sesma offered an outlet on the left but neither De Paula or Pavoni, fresh back from injury, could offer any width on the right. This also left Velazquez exposed at right back – an area the visitors tried to exploit at every opportunity as Velazquez struggled positionally. Oli was getting very frustrated and was sent to the stands by referee Hevia Obras for complaining about a tough decision. Castellon nearly doubled their lead in the 24th minute, but as a cross from the left was turned acrobatically goalwards from 6 yards, Armando made an astonishing reflex save to push the ball over. With Cadiz lacking idea’s, the nearest they came to a breakthrough was a long ball from Paz which almost found Sesma’s run, or when Sesma was booked for diving in the area. As the fourth official indicated 3 minutes of injury time would be played, Castellon won a corner, and after a flick on at the near post Mora was left with a simple tap-in to double their lead. 0-2 at half time and the players left the field to a chorus of whistles.

Nano was bought on for Sesma at half time, and like Sesma he did offer a threat down the left, but still the right hand side looked week. Enrique and Moran came on, and at least with Enrique on the right the midfield looked more balanced, but still passes were misplaced and apart from hopeful balls into the box Cadiz couldn’t create any chances let alone score. A number of set-pieces summed up the general standard of play with the home side consistently failing to beat the first man with crosses. As the final minutes approached, Nano had a header that went narrowly over and a right foot shot from the edge of the box after good work from Enrique, but even then Castellon could have rubbed salt in the wound at the end as Raul Lopez and Paz both made uncharacteristic mistakes to almost make the scoreline 0-3.

A tough trip back to Castellon follows on Wednesday in the Copa del Rey, then it’s a trip to Hercules, where Oli will be under pressure to stop the rot.
