Week 38 Tenerife 2

v

0 Cadiz
21st May 2005 Gavilán 34, 41
Fagiani Oli

Cadiz missed the chance to go top of the league for the night with a poor performance at the Rodriguez López stadium. Cadiz fielded the same 11 players that started last weeks goal feast against Valladolid, but it was clear from the first whistle this was going to be a different prospect. In the 2nd minute De Quintana was adjudged to have fouled Hidalgo as he broke towards goal, and Fagiani curled the free kick just over a relieved Armando's goal. The scare shocked Cadiz into action, and when Oli found Jonathan Sesma down the left, his deep cross was volleyed goalwards by Enrique at the far post, but unfortunately it was straight at the keeper who pushed the shot away. Moments later Enrique won the ball in midfield and was promptly brought down by Fagiani, who became the first player into the referee's book. Manolo Perez found the keeper with his attempted cross from the resulting freekick, and from there Tenerife broke, ending with Jesus firing over from a dangerous position. A couple of minutes later Julio met a headed clearance from De Quintana and volleyed just over from 25 yards as the home side started to up the tempo. In the 20th minute Manolo Pêrez was lucky to escape a booking for a foul on Jesus, and from the freekick the ball was heading goalwards before a deflection off the wall earnt Tenerife a corner. Cadiz failed to fully clear the danger, and a cross from the right was headed onto the bar from 12 yards out by the impressive Jesus. The next danger came in the 27th minute when Varela attempted to shepherd the ball out by the corner flag, Gavilán managed to rob the ball and pulled the ball back into a dangerous area, but fortunately Velazquez just got to the ball first. It wasn´t long until the home side converted their possession into the opening goal. Jesus broke through the centre of the park, and he slipped a perfectly weighted ball inside Velazquez and into the path of Gavilán, who's low first time shot across Armando found the bottom corner. Keko then almost doubled the lead after good work in the area, but his low shot flew inches past the far post. Pavoni looked to relieve the pressure at the other end, and after a good run he bundled his way into the area and went down under pressure, but the referee waved away the muted penalty appeals. In the 41st minute however Cadiz found themselves two down. Good build up play involving Hidalgo led to the ball being laid across the edge of the area, where Gavilán fired an unstoppable low shot into the bottom left hand corner for his second goal in seven minutes. It nearly went from bad to worse as the match approached half  time, but Keko's freekick floated just wide after he was fouled by De Quintana.

De Quintana was substituted for De La Cuesta as Cadiz hoped to improve for the second half. It looked promising when Manolo Perez won a free kick 40 yards out, but unfortunately Enrique's freekick sailed agonisingly over the inrushing forwards and into the keepers hands. Fagiani then did well at the opposite end, his deep cross was met on the volley by Hidalgo, but he could only divert the ball into the side netting. Ten minutes into the second half Enrique made way for last weeks hero Mirosavljevic as Cadiz went in search of the goal that would get them back into the game. Oli was then booked as he conceded a freekick out of frustration. Cadiz then had their best spell in the match, first Varela got to the byline but his low cross was hacked clear in the middle, and then Pavoni cushioned a long ball into the path of Mirosavljevic, but his volley was held by the keeper. Unfortunately the match then became heavily one sided towards Tenerife who seemed to create chances with every spell of possession. First goal scorer Gavilán got to the byline but his pull back was just out of reach of Keko, then Keko set up Raul Martin who forced a save from Armando. Pavoni was then substituted for De Gomar, but the change did little to alter the game. The impressive Keko saw his effort pushed behind by Armando, and from the resulting corner Raul Martin was unlucky not to hit the target with his dipping volley from the edge of the box. As the home side kept possession they forced another corner, which was only cleared to Hidalgo who also saw his volley fly narrowly over the bar. Armando was again called upon when he smothered the ball at the feet of Raul Martin late on, and in the three minutes of injury time the only goal that looked likely was a further one to the home side.

The performance was poor but it was easy to see how Celta Vigo also lost here weeks earlier, with the team from the Canaries producing a performance which belied their mediocre league position. The importance of winning the two remaining home games was emphasised by this showing. With Celta and Recreativo both failing to win, despite Eibar and Alavés late winners, a win at home to Ciudad Murcia next week in the Carranza will put the promotion charge back on track.
