GAME
With
the league championship already won many thought that Gracia would play many of
the players who have not been regulars this season but in fact he made very few
changes. Dani starts in goal replacing the suspended Casilla, Delgado returns at
the heart of defense after his two match suspension with Mansilla rested and
Cifuentes starts at left back for the rested Raul Lopez. Lopez Silva starts down
the left wing for the injured Juanma, whilst Toedtli returns to lead the team
after his layoff through injury. With the championship won, despite the reduced
entrance prices, there were only about 6,000 in the Carranza hoping to see an
end of season fiesta of football from los amarillos and it started brightly with
Lopez Silva making a great run after just three minutes, which saw him glide
past three challenges advancing from the halfway line to the edge of the
visitors box before slipping the ball to Toedtli to his left with just the
keeper to beat but on this occasion the Argentinians effort was easily collected
by Perez, the Linense keeper. It was clear that Cadiz were the superior side and
they had complete control of the game however it was to be shortlived when after
just 12 minutes the ball was played out by Dani to Cristian, who passed it back
to Fragoso who miscontrolled the ball and saw it running free towards the edge
of the box with Chico racing towards it, the Cadiz central defender lunged
desperately to try and recover the situation as Chico arrived at the ball, which
subsequently rolled towards Dani, the Cadiz keeper, and Chico went down. It was
difficult to see who had got the last touch but the referee decided that it was
the Linense forward and he awarded the visitors a dubious but understandable
penalty, however what he then did completely ruined the game for Cadiz and in a
remarkably similar scenario to Delgado's expulsion a few weeks back, the
referee, Ramon Madrid, brought out a straight red card and Fragoso was off
reducing los amarillos to ten men with almost the whole match still to play.
Chico took the penalty and fired it well to the left of Dani to make it 0-1 to
the visitors. Despite the numerical inferiority it was still Cadiz who looked
the more likely to score with Enrique firing a great opportunity too high after
a well rehearsed free kick from Caballero and then Ormazabal had a great chance
when another Caballero free kick bounced free in the area just two yards from
the keeper which Ormazabal stooped to try and head home but the ball hit his
shoulder and bounced loose before being finally cleared. It is fair to say that
the game turned rather scrappy with few good passing movements but it was Cadiz
who were putting together the better passages of play but without being able to
equalise and the half finished with the visitors still a goal to the good.
With
barely two minutes of the second half gone and the Linense lead was doubled when
a ball over the top caught out David Garcia, who stood claiming an offside
decision that never came, before tracking back to try and hold up Chico who had
collected the ball. The Linense forward was much too smart for the Cadiz
defender, who had come on for Fleurquin early in the first half and was the butt
of much hilarity to the cadistas with his poor play, and Chico was able to round
him with ease before pulling the ball back to Joseph who fired home form two
yards out. The Linense, who are already relegated, fought hard with plenty of
energy but little guile to try and take the three points from the champions and
came close to getting a third but thanks to Cifuentes the goal bound effort was
cleared from the line. Cadiz pressed forward and in the 72nd minute Caballero
powered into the area and went down under a 'challenge' from Alberto and the
referee awarded a penalty to los amarillos, which Caballero took and clipped the
ball home to make it 1-2 with still more than a quarter of an hour left. When
Cristian picked up a yellow card a couple of minutes later, Erice replaced him
and Cadiz played with just the three at the back and it was nearly all
Cadiz in the final minutes with Ormazabal clipping an effort into the side
netting from a very tight angle. However with the home side pushing forward in
numbers looking for the equaliser they were always susceptible to a quick boot
out and on one such occasion the ball was not cut out by David Garcia and Chico
was racing through with just Dani to beat but the young keeper had raced from
his line quickly and managed to block the Linense forward before he reached the
area he then continued out to tackle, quite superbly, Joseph who was following
up, which gave Cadiz the time to quash the danger. With time running out Alvaro
put in a good cross to the edge of the box that Toedtli looked to have
controlled with his chest/shoulder before firing the ball home to make it 2-2
but the referee thought otherwise and blew for a foul, presumably for a
perceived hand ball by the Cadiz centre and the score remained 1-2 at the final
whistle and a very disappointing end to the league run at home.
There were some positives to come from the game, Lopez Silva continues to
impress, Caballero's dead ball play, Cifuentes and Erice both showed well and
Toedtli looked fit, although he rarely received the right ball. The other
positive were the yellow cards for Fleurquin and Cristian, which mean that they
are both suspended for the final league game but will be available for the play
offs.
