Cadiz
finally went down to the Segunda Liga but not after a spirited effort at Getafe.
Cadiz named the same starting XI for the must win game, with Berrizo partnering
Paz in the middle of defence.
Both teams came out and created chances,
with Getafe looking for a win in front of their fans for the final home game of
the season, while Cadiz obviously needed the three points to keep alive any
hopes of a miraculous survival. In the first ten minutes Limia responded well to
two long shots, whereas at the other end Pavoni wasn’t decisive enough when
well placed. Paz was then man handled in the box but neither the referee or the
linesman noticed, although 3,000 travelling fans certainly did. Paunovic then
had a good chance on the 15 minute mark, but fortunately it was on his weaker
side and he failed to make the chance count. Shortly after Cadiz snatched a
vital goal, and fittingly it was Lucas Lobos who scored. A long ball down the
left seemed to force Lobos wide, but he lofted a wonderful volley into the far
corner of Luis Garcia’s goal to make it 6 goals in 8 games. It is no wonder
that the Getafe chairman asked of his availability after the game with such a
record in a struggling team. With the travelling Cadistas starting to dream of a
miracle, the away team grew in confidence, and went in search of a second. On
the half hour mark Pavoni headed wide when he found some space in the box. In
the 37th minute Riki showed why he has so many admirers amongst the
bigger Spanish teams, when he raced past Paz only to see his shot well saved by
the feet of Limia.
0-1
at the break and as a result Schuster bought on Jerez born Güiza to try and
spark Getafe into life. Getafe started the second half brightly but the
travelling defence coped admirably. Paunovic again found himself with just Limia
to beat, but again the Yugoslav let Cadiz off the hook. In the 60th
minute the Cadiz fans were boosted with two goals scored elsewhere in the
country. Goals for Zaragoza and Osasuna
against Alaves and Racing meant a win here could lead to an exciting final day
of the season. Fleurquin almost made it a double celebration with a long range
effort, but his shot just missed. The results elsewhere would only help if Cadiz
could hold on. The match then changed when the impressive Paz went off injured.
The previously solid looking defence didn’t adapt to the change well, and as
they had previously threatened, Getafe equalised. Pulido punished a poor
clearance to level, leaving Limia to hurriedly kick the ball up to the centre
circle as even a draw would not be enough for los amarillos. Estoyanoff was
brought on for Enrique to introduce some more pace up front. Schuster replied by
bringing on Pachón, who scored a far post header with almost his first touch.
As Cadiz threw caution to the wind, the impressive Riki added a third, to give
Getafe a flattering 3-1 win. The Cadiz players returned to the field long after
the final whistle to once again pay homage to their faithful following, but now
next weeks finale at home to Malaga will have nothing riding on it apart from
Andalusian bragging rights.
