news this week sees Enrique return to the starting line up after his injury lay
off with Lopez Silva unavailable because of suspension. Fleurquin and Caballero
return to the midfield after suspension and Rubiato continues up front with
Toedtli still not fully fit. In a match that always looked difficult on paper it
was Cadiz who started brightly with a Caballero free kick being scrambled away
by Dani Hernandez, the Jaen keeper, as early as the fifth minute. Three minutes
later and another good passage of play from the Cadiz midfield ended with the
ball at the feet of Juanma on the edge of the area and he turned and fired in a
good left foot shot that the keeper did well to divert diving to his right to
keep the scores all level. Another chance fell to Juanma in the 16th minute but
this time his right foot effort was blocked by a defenders lunge and the ball
was cleared to safety but the opening goal was not far away and indeed it came
just two minutes later when Cadiz broke down the right, Cristian to Enrique who
clipped the ball across goal where it bounced without the keeper or any defender
making any contact and Rubiato dived forward to head home form a couple of yards
out to make it 0-1 to los amarillos to the delight of the couple of hundred
cadistas who had journeyed up to support their team. The goal seemed to act as a
wake up call for the home team who started to power forward strongly and
dominate the rest of the half. In the 25th minute a great break from Jaen almost
ended in an equalizer but the final shot was just wide of the mark. For all the
pressure up to half time Casilla did not actually have a shot to save as the
Cadiz defense held strong against a worthy challenger for the title.
The
second half started in a similar vein with the home team looking powerful
but without really creating any clear chances and it was Cadiz who came closest
to scoring when Enrique fired in a free kick from 25 yards out in the 59th
minute that Hernandez scrambled to push aside. Caballero chased the loose ball
by the edge of the area and played it back to Enrique who chipped the ball back
in front of goal where Juanma headed the ball straight into the hands of the
keeper. A couple of minutes later and a great break from Juanma from inside the
Cadiz half saw los amarillos in a 3 against 2 situation with Rubiato to his left
and Enrique to his right but the final ball from the impressive left winger was
too strong for Rubiato and the ball ran through to a very relieved Hernandez.
Five minutes later and another powerful speedy break by Cadiz ended with
Ormazabal clipping a great cross from the left back across goal to the far post
where Fran Cortes tried to volley the ball home from a narrow angle but his
effort smashed into the post before going behind. The closest Jaen came to
troubling Casilla was from set plays and half way through the second period
Cadiz and their keeper were all over the place as a free kick was deflected and
allowed to bounce around in the Cadiz box before a Jaen attacker nodded the ball
over the bar. In the 73rd minute another free kick was played across the Cadiz
box and it bounced between the Cadiz defense and Casilla before going just wide
of the far post. With less than fifteen minutes to the final whistle Juanma
broke at speed and raced into the Jaen box where he was tackled and went down
heavily on his left shoulder, although after treatment he played on he was soon
substituted after an excellent performance today. The final whistle came with
Cadiz the victors and crowned as division champions with still two games to go
and with now two chances of gaining promotion back to the Segunda A, with the
preliminary rounds for the division champions being played on the weekends of
the 17th and 24th May.
