BACK TO FIXTURES & RESULTS PREVIOUS GAME NEXT GAME
It was all uphill for los amarillos when within a minute of the
start Xerez had won a corner and from the resultant cross into the area Alex
Geijo rose above the defense and fired in a great header from six yards out,
which Armando could only watch fly into the net to put the visitors one up. This
seemed to affect Cadiz badly and they found it difficult to play with any
rhythym or fluidity until the 12th minute when some good play from Lucas Lobos,
playing in a more central position today, saw him pass to Pablo, whose centre
was headed goalwards by Miguel Garcia forcing Chema, in the Xerez goal, to pull
off a good save. Neither side really dominated, although Chema was the busier
keeper, as Cadiz tried to find a goal to bring the teams back to all square.
However on one ocassion when Cadiz had a corner the ball was cleared quickly up
to the halfway line, where the usually dependable Raul Lopez, was out muscled to
the ball by Geijo who then set off towards the goal with the Cadiz defence
trying desperately to intercept him. As they closed on him Geijo let fly but his
shot was high and wide of Armando's goal to the relief of the home supporters.
Lobos was involved in most of the good plays from Cadiz and he won a number of
corners but they all came to nothing and were easily handled by the visiting
defence. With just 5 minutes to go to half time the best play of the half saw
Miguel Garcia's diagonal cross field pass go to Pablo, who controlled the ball
well and rolled into the path of the impressive Vella, who ran on to the pass
and fired a shot towards goal from 20 yards, but unfortunately it was too close
to Chema who was able to get his body in the way and collect the resultant loose
ball. Shortly afterwards some more good individual play from Lobos saw him hook
an effort towards the visitors goal but it just drifted wide of the mark to
leave Cadiz one down at half time. Cadiz came back looking to get the ball wide whenever possible to Pablo and Sesma, which usually resulted in them being fouled giving los amarillos a number of free kicks in dangerous areas. On one of these ocassions, Sesma was fouled near the bye line just outside the box and up stepped Lucas Lobos, who, instead of crossing the ball into the box saw the keeper off his line and curled his shot towards goal only to see it cannon off the bar and away to safety. As Cadiz pressed forward gaps began to appear across their defence and Xerez tried to break quickly to take advantage of the situation. On one such instance the ball fell to the dangerous Geijo on the halfway line who then started his run towards goal and when two Cadiz defenders went left to cover a run of another Xerez player down the right wing, Geijo continued down the centre and made it to the edge of the area before being challenged by any Cadiz player. He went down under the challenge with three defenders around him, for what looked like a clear cut penalty, but amazingly the referee decided that he had dived and incredibly booked the big Xerez forward. Shortly afterwards, with the Cadiz defence rushing out, he got the ball in the net from another header but this time the linesman had his flag up for offside. Cadiz could not be faulted for their effort but they were not really causing Chema any problems until with just 6 minutes to go, the ball was cleared from a corner and fell to Vella some 40 yards out and he took aim and fired in a howitzer of a shot that flew into the net to make it 1-2 and give the Cadiz hopeful something to cheer about. The crowd were on their feet trying to encourage the yellow team forward hoping that they could somehow snatch an equaliser but it was not to be and the spoils went to the blues of Xerez.
