Cadiz snatched a late draw against Real Sociedad in their penultimate home game of the season, but like so often this season it was another story of missed chances for the home side. Esparrago made one change, with Lucas Lobos returning straight back into the side at the expense of Moran, after the forward had dropped to the bench at the Nou Camp with a slight knock picked up in training.

Cadiz raced out of the blocks, and it looked from the set-up that Esparrago was determined that there would be goals, with Cadiz’s failure to score in some home games this season a major factor in their lowly league position. Lobos created the first chance, his great cross from the right narrowly avoiding no fewer than four onrushing players. With the team looking more offensive than normal, there were obviously going to be gaps in defence. Uranga took advantage down the right and won a freekick. Poor defending left Xabi Prieto totally unmarked and he made no mistake to make it 0-1. The fans and players were stunned, but both responded brilliantly.

Argentinians Pavoni and Lobos were finding some great positions between the midfield and upfront, and between them they created half chances for Enrique, Fleurquin, Sesma and Varela. The clearest was for Sesma, in an almost carbon copy of last Saturday in the Nou Camp. Pavoni crossed in low and Sesma put the ball in the net, only for it to be chalked off for offside. If those two goals had stood Cadiz would be looking a lot healthier in their quest for survival. This doubly knocked the stuffing from Cadiz, as keeper Riesgo took a knock in the move. With his treatment and eventual substitution, the momentum was briefly lost. It didn’t take long for Cadiz to regain their composure, and the referee turned down what looked like a very strong penalty appeal after a foul on Enrique. Pavoni then had a chance from a corner but although his effort beat the keeper the ball hit the woodwork. Cadiz then enjoyed a number of corners without an end result, although Fleurquin was inches away from drawing level from one centre. Minutes later Sesma crossed to Enrique, and with the goal at his mercy he somehow failed to convert. It looked like one of those days. Moments later a similar story – Sesma to Enrique, and with time to think the winger missed the target. Varela then missed arguably the chance of the half in the 44th minute, when he shot over after Enrique’s good work.

The second half started with renewed optimism. But as has been the case too often this season, when dominating a game a sloppy goal was given away. Two minutes after half time Garitano scored after poor defending. Whilst the defence has performed admirably for the majority of the past two seasons, in the primera liga any mistake is punished and 0-2 wasn’t a fair reflection of the previous 47 minutes. For the following few minutes Sociedad had more of the ball as the Cadiz players looked amazed at the scoreboard. That almost changed when Enriques cross fell to Sesma, but he tried to use his wrong foot. Vella then had a long shot but substitute keeper Alberto pushed the ball wide for a corner. Lucas Lobos then had a massive appeal for a penalty turned down and it looked as though there was no way back. Esparrago then made a triple substitution, with Oli, Moran and Estoyanoff coming on. Shortly after Moran squared to fellow sub Estoyanoff to reduce the deficit to 1-2. Sesma then had another effort ruled out for offside in the 85th minute, as Cadiz searched desperately for the two goals they needed to keep Sociedad within sight in the league table. Oli and Enrique were both then unlucky not to score as it looked like the footballing gods were against Cadiz. In the last few seconds Cadiz won a penalty after a handball, and Lobos stayed cool to secure a point.

After almost 20 corners and 10 clear cut chances, a point is a disappointing result, but there is still hope of a miraculous survival if 6 points are gained at Getafe, where 2,500 travelling fans are expected, and at home to Malaga in the final game. If the worst happens and Cadiz do go down, the fans will hope that the club can hold on to their main players, and if so, this years experience in the primera liga will hopefully lead to a quick return to the top flight where they have been far from embarrassed this season.
