After
last weeks plethora of red cards against Cadiz there are three enforced changes
as Delgado, Fleurquin and Caballero are all suspended and Toedtli failed a last
minute fitness test and is also not included. Fragoso returns to partner
Mansilla at the heart of the defence whilst Jon Erice makes his first start in
midfield alongside Rosu, who moves in from the left with Juanma starting down
the left wing and Rubiato starts again as the front man. Normally Cadiz start
very strongly however this afternoon the opening minutes belonged to the
visitors and within the first few minutes there was danger in the Cadiz box when
the ball was played across from the bye line and the ball clipped the bar before
going behind. The initial forays were all a bit scrappy with passes
going astray by both sides and neither keeper called into action, however in the
20th minute the ball was played up to Rubiato some 30 yards out and as he was
closed down by the defenders he played the ball beyond them to where Juanma was
racing in towards goal with just Valerio, the Ejido keeper, to beat and he fired
in a great left footed shot across the keeper and in by the far post to make it
1-0 to los amarillos to the delight of the crowded stadium. Within a few minutes
the visitors had the ball in the net but the player was in an offside position
when the ball was played through and the 'goal' was ruled out. In the 35th
minute a tremendous goalbound shot from Rico was superbly turned behind by a
diving Casilla but after that the rest of the first half was all Cadiz and they
could easily have doubled their advantage, mainly due to the elusive Lopez
Silva, who again caused the opposition all sorts of problems. Firstly he fired
in a corner from the left that completely fooled Valerio and was heading in to
the goal by the far post before an Ejido defender managed to hook it clear with
Fragoso also bearing down on the ball, then he fired in a free kick that was
just too high of the mark. On the stroke of half time Rosu had a shot that was
blocked and came back to him before he put it back into the box but the defense
were able to clear it before a Cadiz player could latch onto it and so the half
ended with Cadiz still just the one goal ahead.
The
second half started strongly for Cadiz and they began to dominate their
opponents in the quest to increase the lead and make the match safer and just
seven minutes into the half a great opportunity fell to Rubiato. The play
started down the left through Raul Lopez who passed the ball to Juanma before
continuing his run down the wing to collect the return pass from Juanma, who
raced into the box and was found by Raul Lopez and his powerful shot was blocked
and rebounded out to Lopez again, who clipped a right foot cross into the area and it fell
to the feet of the unmarked Rubiato just 3 yards from goal but the front mans
control was poor and the ball got stuck under his feet allowing the keeper and
his defense to close him down and eventually Juanma managed to get something on
the ball but it was too late and the danger was cleared by the visitors. Cadiz
continued pushing forward and looking the more likely to score and in the 81st
minute Lopez Silva went down in the area, penalty, but the referee decided
otherwise and play continued this was followed shortly afterwards by a long
range shot from Enrique, who was making his comeback after injury replacing the
injured Juanma in the 74th minute, but his shot was off the mark. The final few
minutes was heart stopping stuff as the nerves began to show throughout the
Cadiz team and the visitors sensed that they may be able to get something out of
the game and with time running out Ejido won three corners in quick succession
but thankfully they were unable to convert the danger into a goal and Cadiz ran
out the victors by the single goal. This victory leaves los amarillos six points
clear at the top with just three games to play and next week could see Cadiz
crowned as champions, as they visit second placed Real Jaen, the only team who
could possibly overtake Cadiz. However a win next week by Cadiz would definitely
see them remain at the top and even a draw should see them safe because of their
greater goal difference.
