GAME
Two
forced changes this week with Fleurquin starting for the suspended Bezares and
Kosowski starting for the injured Gustavo Lopez. With the visitors fighting for
a promotion place this looked like being a tough contest for Cadiz, who have won
their last two games. Right from the start it was los amarillos who looked the
more dangerous and after just three minutes Natalio had an effort on goal,
although it was wide of the mark and then two minutes later Kosowski took a
corner the ball was headed on by De la Cuesta and Dani was inches away from
getting a touch on the ball, which would have diverted the ball into the goal.
Almost identical to the goal that Dani scored last week at Numancia. Sporting
looked lack lustre going forward and only seemed to be able to get near to the
Cadiz box thanks to several free kicks awarded in dangerous positions just
outside the Cadiz area. However in the 18th minute a good ball by Bilic fell to
Castro near the far post but his effort on goal was wide of the mark. A minute
later and a great break by los amarillos allowed Natalio to play in Enrique in a
very dangerous position on the right edge of the visitors area and he crossed
towards Dani, who was perfectly positioned in front of goal, but a defender just
managed to intercept the pass. At the other end of the park Pedro took a free
kick that was on goal but easily dealt with by Contreras. Then in the 35th
minute came the first decision by the referee that had a big bearing on this
game. Cadiz broke well with Dani running through the middle towards goal, just
before he reached the area he was brought down but the ball ran free and Enrique
was onto it first and burst into the area with just the keeper to beat but he
was soon upended and on the floor. Certainly one or both of the tackles on Dani
and Enrique was a foul, and if it was a foul on Enrique then it was a penalty,
but the referee gave neither decision and allowed play to continue much to the
dismay of the Cadiz players and crowd. The half finished all square at 0-0.
Although Cadiz had controlled much of the game in the first half they had
been unable to carve out too many clear cut chances and a lot of their good play
was ruined by wayward passes and it looked as if the game was going to end as a
0-0 draw. But just three minutes into the second half the next big decision by
the referee that went against Cadiz. Sporting had broken through the middle and
were heading towards the Cadiz box but some 30 yards out when Miguel Garcia
tripped the Sporting player from behind, a clear foul and a deserved yellow card
but instead of showing yellow the referee showed a straight red, leaving Cadiz a
man down with almost the whole of the second half to go. This moved the impetus
to the visitors who realised that they had a great chance of victory to help in
their push for promotion and suddenly started pushing forward with vigour. In
the 55th minute Bilic fired in a good shot that flew just over the bar and then
three minutes later Diego Castro picked up the ball on the right hand side of
the Cadiz area with two defenders in front of him, he flicked the ball between
the two Cadiz players and raced round them to collect the ball in the box and as
there was no other Cadiz player backing up Castro found himself in a great
position just inside the area with Contreras ahead of him and he clipped a shot
in that swung inwards and flew in at the far post to make it 0-1 to the
visitors. It was a great bit of individual skill. Shortly afterwards and it was
almost two nil when Bilic headed goalwards but Contreras leapt high to his right
and managed to palm the ball away to safety.
Then
another amazing decision by the referee when Bilic chased a bouncing ball into
the Cadiz area as Contreras came out to collect it, both players arrived at the
same time but Bilic with his feet high clattered into the Cadiz keeper and as
both players went tumbling the ball ran free, with the referee waving play on,
but although Bilic was first to the ball he couldn't control it and Contreras
recovered to smother it. With time running out Procopio threw caution to the
wind and took De la Cuesta off and put on Casas playing with just three at the
back. It was almost all one way traffic in the final 20 minutes with Cadiz
powering forward and Dani Fornell almost levelled as he ran onto a loose ball in
the area but his effort was well blocked by Roberto, the Sporting keeper. With a
quarter of an hour left the numerical advantage that Sporting had enjoyed for so
long was nullified when the referee showed a second yellow to Camara after he
tripped Natalio as the Cadiz forward was powering into the area. Despite the
constant pressure los amarillos were unable to level and so the points went to
the visitors. The Cadistas showed there appreciation of the effort by giving the
players a rousing send off and then showed their disgust with the referee by
giving him a somewhat different send off.
