Just
two changes form the team that started last week with Caneda returning to his
usual position, partnering De Quintana at the heart of the defence and Velazquez
coming in at right back for the injured Vella.
Hopes were high after last weeks victory at Las Palmas that Cadiz would
continue their winning ways in a tough match against Ciudad Murcia at a soggy
Carranza. With light rain falling virtually all day and continuing throughout
the match the surface was very greasy and with the ball skidding off the surface
and players having some difficulty turning quickly the conditions certainly
hampered the way Cadiz normally play.
The game started with both teams trying to get used to the playing surface
with Cadiz starting the more positive. However it was Ciudad Murcia who had the
first effort on goal when in the fifth minute they were awarded a free kick some
30 yards out after a De Quintana foul. Christian Diaz took the kick but fired it
high over the bar. A couple of minutes later Cadiz were awarded a free kick
inside their own half, which Caneda took. His punt upfield was diverted off a
Murcia defender, as Acuņa jumped with him, into the path of Pavoni, who fired a
super right foot volley from all of 20 yards past the helpless Jose Juan to make
it 1-0 to the home side. Cadiz continued to pressurize the visitors looking to
add to their lead and within 4 minutes a good cross by Pablo was well cut out by
a defender, with Acuņa steaming in behind. In the 24th minute Diaz was booked
for a foul on Lobos 30 yards out, which resulted in Miguel Garcia firing in an
effort along the ground, forcing Juan to fall to his left making an easy
save. A couple of minutes later Armando was forced to make a superb one handed
save from a point blank effort by Goitom, after Velazquez was slow pushing out
and played three Murcia players onside in the penalty area. The next chance fell
to los amarillos after good work between Pavoni and Pablo in the 35th minute saw
Pavoni's effort on target but easily saved by the keeper. The ex Cadiz player,
Varela, then received a rousing reception from the whole crowd when he had to be
substituted after picking up an injury a couple of minutes earlier. Within a few
minutes of half time Acuņa was twice foiled by last ditch tackles as he bore
down on goal, to leave the score at one nil to los amarillos at half time.
The
second half started with Ciudad Murcia starting to force the play and creating
the better chances. Just 4 minutes into the half Armando was forced to dive to
his right to tip the ball behind from an effort by Saizar. A few minutes later
and a simple play from a corner saw the ball fly across the front of the Cadiz
goal, where Goitom headed the ball from point blank range forcing Armando to be
alert and beat the ball away to safety. The inevitable was waiting to happen and
with just a quarter of an hour gone in the second half the visitors were awarded
a free kick wide right of the Cadiz box. The ball was well cleared by the
defence but the ball went straight out to Ayoze, who fired a shot goalwards from
at least 30 yards. The ball flew, at pace, straight down the centre of the goal
and over the flailing Armando, who was unable to stop the effort bringing the
teams level again. The next 20 minutes or so were played very much across the
centre of the park with neither side being able to break through again. When
they did go forward the best effort from Cadiz came from Pablo, whose effort
from outside the box flew two feet over the target. With just 5 minutes of
normal time remaining Murcia were awarded a free kick about 25 yards out. As the
Cadiz wall rushed forward to block the ball it was lobbed over them to the feet
of Jimenez, who was left all alone, but his right foot effort went past the left
post of Armando. A minute later and Cadiz were shouting for a penalty when, with
the ball at the feet of Pavoni and just the keeper to beat he went down after
being sandwiched between two defenders. The referee saw nothing wrong with the
challenge and waved play on. With just seconds left of the match, with an
unlikely four minutes of time being added on, Velazquez was adjudged to have
fouled an attacker just to the right of the Cadiz area. The free kick was fired
in by Manolo in front of goal where the inrushing Diaz beat Caneda and De
Quintana to head the ball from point blank range past the helpless Armando, who
although getting good hands to the ball could do nothing to stop it finding the
back of the net. It was virtually the last kick of the match and gave the
visitors the victory and the three points which meant that they would replace
Cadiz in fourth place.
