Cadiz picked up a vital point at home to Deportivo De La Coruna, after going down to an early goal against the second best away performers in La Liga this season. The point was especially welcomed as Alaves, Mallorca, At. Bilbao and Racing Santander all lost home games, with the Racing manager resigning as a result.

Esparrago stuck with the Diamond attack he has favoured in recent weeks, with Sesma, Pavoni and Enrique supported by recent revelation Lucas Lobos. Fleurquin partnered Suarez in the middle of the park. Cadiz began brightly, and looked to continue where they left off after their fine win in Zaragoza. Pavoni almost opened the scoring, but after a corner eluded the keeper the Argentinians shot was scrambled away by the mass of defenders guarding the goal. Iago did open the scoring at the other end, when the ball broke kindly in the box and his shot squirmed into the only part of the goal unguarded by Limia or his defenders. Cadiz refused to lie down though, and for the second week running looked to fight back after suffering an early set back. With the rain coming down quite heavily (which later led to the calling off of Sevilla’s game with Barcelona) Cadiz battled bravely as the water started forming puddles on the pitch. This hampered the game plan of allowing the wingers to push on and dribble against the Depor defenders. The only way Cadiz looked like scoring was from set-plays, but even then the defence dealt with the majority of crosses with relative ease.

Esparrago decided that he would make a double change at the break, which is not something he has done much this season. Bezares and Oli came on for Suarez and Enrique, and the energy of Bezares in midfield instantly improved the home team, with the young midfielder covering every blade of the Carranza grass. Varela twice tried his luck from distance to no avail, but it was obvious that Cadiz were growing more likely to find a breakthrough. Deportivo dropped deeper and played much of the game with ten men behind the ball. In the 64th minute Pavoni crossed well from the right but Sesma couldn’t hit the target with Molina losing the flight of the ball. Minutes later Guzman was sent off for his second yellow card, and the match swung further towards Cadiz. In the 82nd minute came the breakthrough. Cadiz won a freekick on the edge of the box and Lucas Lobos scored yet another vital goal from a dead ball situation with a fiercely struck shot to the right of Molina to spark jubilant scenes in the crowd.

Manuel Pablo was then shown his second caution, to leave Deportivo to finish the game with 9 men. Despite the numerical advantage Cadiz couldn’t carve out another chance, and after going behind in their last two games, have shown great courage to win four points. They are now just two points from safety, and though Saturdays game in Barcelona may look a huge ask to climb out of the relegation zone, most of the other teams around Cadiz have tricky games. If the gap stays at 2 or 3 points after the next round of games, Cadiz will have a chance of an unlikely escape act with games against a rejuvenated Sociedad at home, Getafe away, and bottom placed Malaga in the Carranza.
