GAME
With
Delgado injured Fragoso drops back to the centre of defence alongside Mansilla
and Ormazabal returns to midfield after his one match suspension. The match
started with the yellows of Cadiz dominating, as they normally do in the
Carranza, with most of the danger coming down the bands but time and again the
final ball in was poor and again the biggest culprit was Enrique. A great break
from midfield found the ball at Enriques feet just inside the box near the bye
line with three Cadiz players making their way into the box just waiting for a
simple cross but his attempt was hit way too hard and it flew over everybody and
the danger was easily cleared. Ten minutes into the game and another strong
break saw Caballero with the ball at his feet racing towards the left of the box
with the Betis defense stretched, he slipped it square to Toedtli who saw that
Enrique was in a better position and he quickly laid the ball off to the right
winger standing unmarked in the box with just the keeper to beat but his shot
was way off the mark. At the other end Casilla was a virtually bystander and
apart from one long shot that was high over the bar he only had to collect a
free kick played into the box, although he did drop the ball with two Betis
players near him he was able to collect the ball again in a heart stopping
moment for the cadistas. Another good break down the right found the ball with
Enrique on the edge of the box but as Ormazabal raced into a gap just to the
left of the right winger, Enrique slipped the ball just behind the midfielder
and again any danger was cleared. Shortly after that Enrique was forced to leave
the field with a muscle injury and his place was taken by Juanma who started
down the left with Lopez Silva moving across to the right. Just ten minutes
after coming on Juanma became the hero when another fine break from midfield
between Toedtli and Caballero saw the midfielder try and play in Juanma on the
edge of the box but his pass was a bit short and intercepted by Isidora, however
Juanma was on the right back in a flash and he managed to get the ball off him
before firing it past the left of Rene, the Betis keeper, to make it 1-0 to los
amarillos. Apart from that goal neither keeper was really called to action in
the first forty five minutes with much of the play around the centre of the
park.
From
the kick off to start the second half, taken by Cadiz, Fleurquin and Caballero
lost the ball between them enabling the visitors to power towards the Cadiz box,
which resulted in a free kick being awarded in a very dangerous position just
outside the box to the right of the goal defended by Casilla. The kick came in
on goal forcing Casilla to drop to his right to push the ball away for it to be
cleared.
This was just a blip however as los amarillos powered forward and created more
chances but it was going to be two decisions of the referee that were going to
be the talking point tonight. Firstly Lopez Silva collected a throw in from
Cristian down near the right hand corner, with his back to goal he clipped the
ball over his head and the defender behind him before running around the
defender and racing into the box with the ball at his feet but he was pulled
back by Toni for a clear foul, which to the absolute amazement of everybody the
referee decided that the offence was outside the box, when it certainly appeared
as if Lopez Silva was at least two feet inside the area and therefore the
decision should have been a penalty in favour of Cadiz. Then two good chances
for Cadiz, the first when Caballero slipped the ball forward to Juanma who was
free on the edge of the box with just the keeper to beat, he shot well but Rene
was quickly down to block the effort and keep his team just one goal down. Next
a chance, at last, for Toedtli who rose at the far post to head the ball
powerfully downwards but again Rene was there to block the effort. With
everything going the way of Cadiz but without extending their lead it was
looking ominous that something would happen that would turn the game around and
so it happened. The visitors burst forward quickly, trying to catch Cadiz in the
break, and the ball was played into the Cadiz box where Casilla was quickly off
his line and dived to clearly push the ball away to his right before Segura went
over him but the referee, this time, decided it was a penalty and gave Betis a
chance to get back in the game. Up stepped Toni to wrong foot Casilla and make
it all square with twenty minutes still to go. For several minutes this set back
seemed to affect Cadiz badly with players seeming to lose their discipline and their shape and a few minutes after that equaliser Cruz headed the ball
past Casilla and watched agonisingly as the ball bounced slowly onto the post
and was then cleared. Cadiz however did not give up and they too hit the
woodwork, twice, first was a cross from Juanma that deflected off Isidora
completely wrong footing Rene but the ball bounced into the outside of the post
and behind for a corner and then Barreiro fired in a great free kick from 20
yards out that smashed into the crossbar, with Rene beaten, and over for a
goalkick. That was the last chance of the match which ended 1-1 and more points
dropped at home by los amarillos, who dominate so much and create plenty of
chances but are not killing off the opposition like they used to at the start of
the season.
