The
team this week saw Neru come in to replace the suspended De Quintana and partner
Caneda at the heart of the defense. Sesma started instead of Nano and Acuņa
started the game for only the third time this season replacing the injured De
Paula.
In the first half of the season the visit to Sporting Gijon resulted in an
amazing 5-4 result after Cadiz had gone two up and had a Paz penalty saved. As a
result of that loss the Cadiz Board decided to change managers, appointing Jose
Gonzalez after sacking Oli. The return match saw Cadiz searching for revenge and
more importantly all three points to get their faltering promotion push back on
track.
The game started slowly with Cadiz exerting the early pressure, whilst the
visitors were passing the ball well, looking to break swiftly. The first
significant chance fell to los amarillos when Pablo, who has been playing
superbly this season, put in a cross to the penalty spot, which Sesma could only
head over the bar. Then in the 10th minute a cross into the Cadiz area was well
headed out but fell loose on the edge of the box and Diego Castro was first to
react and ran onto the ball placing it past Armando's outstretched left hand
into the goal to make it 0-1 to the visitors.
So many times this season Cadiz have dominated but have gone behind against the
run of play. On each occasion they have come storming back, piling on the
pressure in search of the equaliser and so it was today. In the next 15 minutes
there were at least three clear chances any one of which could have gone in the
home sides favour. Firstly good play between Pavoni and Pablo saw the ball run
into the path of Acuņa in the penalty area to the right of the goal but his
strong goalbound effort was well blocked by the diving Roberto in the Sporting
Gijon goal. A few minutes later good play from Fleurquin, who had been pushed
forward in a more attacking role, pass to Sesma who crossed the ball into the
area where firstly Acuņa again had his effort saved and the rebound fell to
Pavoni whose effort was blocked by the defence. Then in the 25th minute it
looked as if it was all square when Acuņa beat the keeper with a header from a
Sesma cross but, the ex Cadiz player, Sastre was on the line to head the ball
away and keep the score at 0-1.
The
red and whites from Sporting Gijon kept looking for the long ball out of defence
but these were easily dealt with by the home team. then in the 35th minute Pablo
picked up the ball just inside his own half and started running down the line
with 3 opposing players around him. He jinxed this way and that with the
opposition backing off and allowing him to continue on. A drop of his left
shoulder saw him cut inside and waltz past a despairing challenge before firing
a great right foot shot from just outside the area past Roberto and into the
back of the net to bring the teams all square.
The second half was a different affair with Sporting Gijon also looking for the
victory, which should have been good for the game but in fact resulted in many
stoppages for fouls, which not only resulted in 5 yellow cards being issued to
each team but also stopped the flow to the game. Still the best chances fell to
Cadiz with Acuņa again unlucky to see his effort into the side netting and then
an effort from Vella, who had run onto a great pass from Pablo, was well blocked
by the Gijon defence. It wasn't all Cadiz though and Armando had to be alert
when a Michel effort from at least 30 yards almost sneaked in at the far post
but the Cadiz stopper and captain managed to palm the ball round for a corner.
Going into the last quarter of the game a flurry of substitutions and free kicks
completely break the flow of the game. Despite that Medina, who had come on to
replace Acuņa, latch on to a good ball from Raul Lopez but his effort was well
saved by Roberto. The match ended as it had started at the beginning of the
second half at 1-1.
With the top three teams all winning and the next four all losing the gap
between the third promotion place and the fourth place has increased to 12
points, with Cadiz a further 3 points adrift, so the chase for promotion is
looking more and more futile. However there are now only 10 points covering the
sixteen teams from fourth to nineteenth place and Cadiz must continue looking to
win every game to avoid sliding down the table.
