Cadiz
were seconds away from a much needed victory before a late Joaquin header meant
more points dropped late in a game. Cadiz started with a diamond formation up
front, with Sesma leading the attack, flanked by Enrique and Lobos with Pavoni
supporting from midfield. Vella started at right back whilst De Quintana and Paz
continued in the centre of defence.
As usual Cadiz raced out of the blocks,
but after tame efforts from distance from Suarez and Sesma the Betis midfield
took over and enjoyed more possession. Rivera
especially seemed to constantly find space and looked a constant threat. Whilst
Betis started to work Limia, Cadiz resorted to long balls behind the opposition
looking for the pace of Sesma and Enrique, but apart from the odd piece of flair
from Lobos it wasn’t resulting in any chances. As the half wore on Cadiz won
some free-kicks in good positions, but unlike in Valencia last week they were
unable to make any of them pay. Betis still enjoyed most of the possession,
although with their current league position it is easy to forget the quality of
players they possess.
At
half time the ineffective Robert was replaced with Assunsao, a player renowned
for his set-pieces and an obvious danger. The match continued to be scrappy, and
Betis seemed to be content to settle for a draw. With games running out, the
Cadiz fans knew that realistically only a win would do. The match continued with
Betis enjoying possession in midfield, and Cadiz playing hopeful balls into the
channel, and crossing into the box whenever possible. Enrique got booked for
diving in the box, but in the 68th minute the referee handed Cadiz a
lifeline with the award of a dubious penalty, when Sesma fell to the floor at
the back post with the ball sailing yards over his head. Lobos took the
responsibility, and fired the ball well past Contreras into the top left corner.
1-0, and maybe Cadiz were going to start getting some luck when they needed it.
At this stage of the season its results that matter not how they are obtained.
With Cadiz fighting for their lives, Joaquin started using the ball better on
the left wing, and after a couple of good crosses he tested Limia himself at the
near post, but the Argentinian stood up well and blocked with his feet. At the
other end, sub Estoyanoff almost wrapped up the points when his shot curled just
wide from the edge of the area. With time running out, Esparrago bought on Oli
to use up some vital seconds. The referee then awarded Betis an innocuous
free-kick on the edge of the box, and Assunsao sent in a superb effort which
Joaquin glanced home with the defenders looking to the linesman but to no avail.
There was still just about enough time for Betis to win a corner, from which
Xisco sent a header goalwards which Limia did well to save low down to his
right.
A draw was probably a fair result, but a
harsh free-kick awarded to Betis cancelled out the generous penalty decision.
Although the point actually closed the gap from safety to four points, this will
be seen as a chance missed, and the feeling in the ground after the game was
that perhaps Cadiz are down already. With Zaragoza next up away from home, Cadiz
need to win some games to instil some much needed confidence and give themselves
a chance of a remarkable escape act.
