GAME
Cadiz
picked up a hard fought point in Vitoria but another game nearer to the end of
the campaign has gone by with Cadiz still 8 points off the promotion places.
Neru came in at the back to replace the suspended De Quintana, whilst Nano
replaced Sesma. Bezares came in to the middle for Miguel Garcia. There was
better news amongst the substitutes, as Abel Buades and Lucas Lobos returned
from injury, with Enrique, Acuña and De Paula adding to a strong looking bench.
Alaves started brightly, and
despite getting relegated with Los Amarillos last season they started the game a
further 4 points behind Cadiz, so this match was a must win if they were to have
a chance of promotion themselves this season. Although the home team started
well and had most of the ball Armando was rarely troubled. As Cadiz got into the
game Medina looked dangerous up front and troubled the home defence. In the 34th
minute Caneda almost capitalised on some indecision in the Alaves box but his
effort went over the bar. As has been the norm in recent weeks Pablo was also
looking sharp on the right wing, and good work from him on the stroke of half
time created a chance for Pavoni but Ardouin made a smart save.
Soon
after the restart Abel Buades and De Paula came on for Fleurquin and Medina as
Gonzalez chased a vital three points. Soon after though Vella had to be alert to
clear an Alaves shot from off his own line. The substitutes then started
influencing the game and the yellows had some good possession, one such spell
almost leading to Pavoni scoring the opening goal. However in the 67th
minute, moments after coming on, Ogbeche coolly slotted home a loose ball from
the edge of the box into the bottom corner leaving Armando no chance. Gonzalez
reacted immediately and introduced Lobos for Nano, a welcome site for the 300
travelling fans. Abel Buades then had a couple of dangerous free kicks, one of
which was headed just over by De Paula. In his short career at Cadiz Buades has
already shown that his left foot can be vital in bringing a goal when the
strikers are struggling to score from open play. This was another such occasion,
and his dangerous 40 yard freekick was flicked into his own net by ex Coventry
striker John Aloisi. Cadiz pushed for a winner, but even the late sending off of
Astudillo meant that as has been so often the case this year, Cadiz had to
settle for a draw despite finishing the game with a numerical advantage.
Apart from Valladolid, now a whopping 18 points
ahead of 4th place, most of the teams chasing promotion seem to be
drawing – with Cadiz being the worst culprit, with 11 draws and most tellingly
8 at the Carranza. A run of four or five wins would still put Cadiz in with a
chance of promotion, but time is running out and they cannot afford to drop
points in this Saturday evenings match at home to Albacete.
