Once again Cadiz’s failure to find the net cost them dearly, as this time against fellow strugglers Alaves they missed the chance to move out of the bottom three in the Carranza. With Cadiz wearing their green strip to celebrate their province, Vella came in to replace the suspended Varela in a starting eleven not containing any surprises. Although Cadiz went on to dominate the first half, Aloisi  from Alaves had the first shot towards goal but he failed to hit the target when well placed. Estoyanoff looked lively from the outset, and the Uruguayan international has been playing superbly recently whilst keeping Enrique, who played so well at the start of the season, out of the team. Estoyanoff and Fleurquin both had long range efforts as the home team looked to earn a much needed win after last weeks late heartache in Bilbao. As Alaves dropped deeper and deeper Medina had a good chance on the half hour mark but his header flashed over. De Quintana almost opened the scoring when he came forward for a set piece, but his marker just did enough to prevent a goalbound effort. Cadiz finished the half well and the home fans applauded their team off after a good opening half.

Cadiz started the second period as they had finished the first, and after another good cross from Estoyanoff just a minute after the break, Bonano made a remarkable point blank save as Paz sent a shot rocketing towards goal. Whilst it is easy to point at Cadiz’s lack of firepower for the two dropped points, with more luck Paz would have scored for the second successive home game. Sesma then fashioned a chance for himself, but he blazed wildly high. Lobos then tried to surprise Bonano from distance, as he looked to inspire the team with his impressive individual flair. Alaves then had their first chance for almost an hour, when in the 57th minute they created the clearest chance of the game. After Cadiz only partially cleared a cross, Astudillo shot goalwards but Limia produced a fine save. The keeper is starting to underline his claims towards the number one jersey. The chance gave confidence to Alaves, and although Cadiz still enjoyed most of the possession, the barrage that had preceeded the hour mark started to show signs of letting up. However in the 75th minute Raul Lopez went very close when his effort struck the woodwork. As the match drew to a close both sides came close to snatching a vital victory, with Alaves going closest when Limia pushed Jandro’s effort onto the woodwork.

Whilst Cadiz will look at their numerous missed chances, it is worth noting that they have lost similar matches at home this season so a point is better than nothing. Coupled with last weeks disappointment in Bilbao, the game in Mallorca on Wednesday night takes on huge significance as any one of nine teams can realistically find themselves finishing the season in the bottom three
