BACK TO FIXTURES & RESULTS PREVIOUS GAME NEXT GAME
The match started with Cadiz unable to make their trademark burst from the blocks, and in the opening quarter of an hour neither team took control of possession and chances were scarce. Castellon started to grow in confidence and Armando had to be alert to make a smart save as Cadiz looked less and less comfortable. Moments later midfielder Rodri fired an unstoppable shot into the top left hand corner of the net from fully 30 yards. There can be little argument over the quality of the strike, but replays suggest Cadiz could have been given a goal kick seconds earlier with the linesman no more than 5 yards away from the ball. The goal momentarily rallied Cadiz, and good work from Pablo, who has been vital in recent weeks, allowed him to cross to Pavoni but he couldn’t trouble Oliva in the home goal. In the 27th minute Pablo was at the heart of another fine move, and Sesma was inches from scoring with Oliva intercepting fantastically when called upon. It wasn’t all one way traffic though, and Rodri was unlucky not to score his second when his header hit the foot of the post with Armando beaten. The yellows, playing in their changed colour of blue, were then on the wrong end of a harsh decision for the second time of the half in the 33rd minute. A long ball was flicked on towards Medina who ran through a giant whole in the centre of the Castellon defence before volleying calmly past the keeper, only for the linesman to flag for offside. Replays show that Medina was at worst level with the defence and the goal should have bought the teams in level. With Jose Gonzalez riled by the decisions, a blow to Pablo caused an outburst to the ref, who reacted by sending him to the stands. The club have already appealed the decision and hope to have Gonzalez on the bench when Hercules visit the Carranza next weekend. The second half saw Castellon start brightly, and the visitors looked dejected. Moran and Nano were thrown on in an attempt to chase the game but moments later Castellon effectively finished the contest with a second, former Cadiz player Mario picking up a poor clearance before finding Antonio Lopez who fired low and hard into the far corner. Gonzalez went for broke and introduced De Paula for Neru, a welcome return for the big front man after weeks of persistent injury troubles. The team finally started playing as they have in recent weeks, but couldn’t find the breakthrough, a couple of headers by De Paula the nearest they came to reducing the deficit.
The gap to the promotion places is now 8 points, and whilst there is still plenty to play for, anything less than a win against Hercules in the Carranza this week and even the most avid of Cadiz fans will start to feel that an immediate return to the primera liga maybe asking too much.
