news this week sees De la Cuesta start in place of the injured De Quintana and
the only other change sees Kosowski start in place of Miguel Garcia, who takes
his place on the bench.
The game started with the wind, that has been howling
for more than a week, continuing in the Carranza and to make matters worse the
rain was also drizzling down. The first quarter of an hour was played through
the middle with neither keeper troubled, although the former Cadiz player,
Sergio Rodriguez came closest in the 13th minute when he fired in a free kick
from just outside the area but the effort was high and the ball flew safely over
the bar. Nearing the half hour mark and Cadiz were taking control of the
encounter putting more pressure on the visitors defense. In the 27th minute a
deep Gustavo Lopez corner was well headed at the far post by De la Cuesta but
his effort bounced along the goal line without a Cadiz player able to tap it in
before it was cleared. A minute later and los amarillos were ahead when good
play down the left between Gustavo Lopez and Gonzalo Vicente resulted in Lopez
chipping the ball across the penalty area, which the Alaves keeper decided to
come out to and try punch away but with the ball hanging in the wind he
completely missed the ball and it fell onto the head of Natalio who simply
nodded the ball home into the unguarded net. In the 36th minute another Lopez
corner from the right was powerfully headed by Fleurquin but his effort smashed
into the bar and bounced back into play, where the ball was cleared. At the
other end and the only cause for concern came from the free kicks that Sergio
was directing and on one occasion the ball was just wide of the post with
Contreras flying across to try to cover the effort. In the final minutes of the
half Natalio broke down the right and put in a great looking cross that was
heading for Bangoura who had taken up a good position in the box but Mateo, the
big Alaves defender flung himself at the ball and managed to intercept the cross
with a powerful header away.
Within
seven minutes of the start of the second half and it was 2-0 to Cadiz. A quick
break out from the back found the ball at the feet of Natalio on the left hand
side of the halfway line with just one defender ahead of him and Bangoura free
to the right in the centre of the park. Natalio weaved the defender ahead of him
first one way then another as he progressed towards the opposition area. As
another defender was making up ground behind him he crossed the ball to Bangoura on the
edge of the box with just the keeper ahead of him. Bangoura got to the ball
before the keeper and clipped it to his left but then went down, did he slip or
did the keeper foul him, it mattered not because Natalio had continued his run
and clipped the loose ball home, although it looked as if it may have come off
the defender, to make it 2-0 to Cadiz. In the 71st minute
Enrique came on for Kosowski, who received a rousing send off, and within
minutes of coming on Enrique had made a powerful run down the right, which
resulted in a corner to Cadiz. Shortly afterwards Alaves had, possibly, their
best effort of the game when Gaspar smashed a strong shot from 30 yards out that
went through the whole defense but also went straight into the arms of Contreras
who gathered the slippery ball with ease. Next it was Cadiz who broke down the
right with good play between Fleurquin, Cristian and Enrique that ended with
Cristian chipping the ball over the top into the right hand side of the box
where Enrique controlled it first time, managing to just drag the ball back
slightly and clip it square into the centre of the goal where Bangoura managed
to get something on the ball to divert it goalwards from short range but Ardoiun,
the Alaves keeper, managed to palm the ball onto his own leg and away to safety.
The last quarter of an hour saw Cadiz drop a bit further back towards their own
goal allowing Alaves more possession but despite this the visitors never really
troubled Contreras. In the final few minutes Calderon put on Dani and Casas,
taking off both Natalio and Bangoura who both received a standing ovation from
the die hard fans who had braved the unusually inclement weather.
