Cadiz suffered a disappointing loss with a poor performance away at fellow La Liga new-comers Celta Vigo. Armando dropped to the bench as Oscar Limia started in goal, whilst Mario Silva, Suarez, Enrique, Pavoni and Oli all came in to the starting eleven.

The visitors started brightly, and Cadiz looked like they could repeat last years fine victory that went a long way to clinching promotion. The back four kept the danger away from Limia, with Cadiz looking to stay patient and await any chances that fell their way on the break. Pavoni almost orchestrated one, when he found Varela on the right. His cross found Enrique but unfortunately his header was weak and was saved easily by Pinto. Two minutes later Enrique turned provider, as he centred towards Oli. The veteran centre forward managed to control the ball well on his chest but his shot was brilliantly saved by Pinto to keep the scores level. Celta hit back in the 20th minute, when Canobbio raced through one on one with Limia. He managed to beat the keeper but Varela raced back to make a vital goal line clearance. Celta were buoyed after the chance but they struggled to create any clear cut chances as the Cadiz rearguard stayed firm. They were undone by a set-piece though. Jorge sent in a cross which found Contreras, who made use of the luck that saw the ball reach him and made it 1-0. This was where Cadiz should have upped their game and regrouped, but disappointingly they allowed Celta to dominate the remaining few minutes of the first half.

Unfortunately Esparrago’s halftime team talk did little to change the match. In the first ten minutes of the second half Baiano, Canobbio and Silva all had chances to double the home sides lead, as Cadiz struggled to get the ball out of their own half. A cross in the 56th minute which Oli headed wide was the only sign the visitors showed towards snatching an unlikely draw. Again Celta kept possession of the ball and Cadiz looked like they lacked the fighting qualities which they were showing at the turn of the year. The introduction of Sesma from the bench breathed life into Cadiz briefly but surprisingly it was full back Varela who looked the most likely to unlock the Celta defence with some promising runs down the right. Vella came on to make his debut late on, but Celta reinforced their European ambitions with the decisive second goal, with Silva taking advantage of a poor clearance out of defence. Pavoni, Lobos and Vella all had half chances as Cadiz finished the stronger side, but it was too little too late. Last week saw 5 teams on 22 points in the league but with 3 of those teams winning and another drawing Cadiz have slipped into the relegation zone. With Espanyol thumping Sevilla 5-0, next weeks home game looks like a six pointer as Cadiz look to leap frog the team from Barcelona.
