Neru came in at left back for his debut in place of the suspended Raul Lopez, while Pavoni continued his comeback from injury playing off Medina up front. For the home team ex-Watford and Burnley striker Gifton Noel Williams didn’t make the squad after his recent signing for Murcia. Cadiz started the brighter of the two promotion hopefuls and forced four corners in the opening ten minutes. Closest to opening the scoring was centre back Cesar Caneda, with a superb 25 yard curler towards the top right corner, but Notario made an equally splendid save and pushed the ball wide. Next Pablo did well on a mazy run across the pitch before sliding in Nano, but after a poor first touch took him wide with Notario rushing out, his cross was overhit and easily dealt with by the retreating defenders. The game changed in the 28th minute. Richi burst towards the edge of the area, and as he was crowded out by Bezares the referee gave a harsh freekick in favour of the Murcians. Ivan Alonso stepped up and fired a low powerful shot through a gaping hole in the wall and past Armando. The goal fired up the home crowd and the bright start from Cadiz was undone. A fine sweeping move down the Murcia left ended with the ball being fed to Leon unmarked at the far post, but he spoilt what would have been a great goal by blazing high and wide under little pressure. Richi then let fly from distance after dispossessing Fleurquin but he too failed to hit the target. Notario was rarely troubled for the rest of the half, although he was alert to punch away Pablo’s in-swinging freekick from distance.
Cadiz remain in fourth place but are now 5 points off Almeria in third, who they host on Saturday. Salamanca are then next up in another home game, with six points vital from these two games to close the gap on the promotion places.
