The opening ten minutes or so were played mainly across the centre of the park with neither side really taking control of the game, although Cadiz looked the more comfortable on the ball. In the thirteenth minute Cadiz were attacking with the impressive Natalio looking dangerous on the ball and it was his ball through the defense that allowed Dani to race into the area and nick it wide of Juan Pablo, in the Tenerife goal, who then appeared to take Dani's leg away for what looked like a clear cut penalty but to the astonishment of the Carranza the referee waved play on and gave nothing (TV replays showed that it was a challenge that probably 99 times out of a 100 would be given as a penalty; unfortunately this was the 1 in a 100 time). Ten minutes after this defining point a quick break out of defence saw Cadiz in a 3 on 3 with the ball at the feet of Enrique, who slipped it to his right where Natalio was racing alongside him but, with just the keeper ahead of him, Natalios effort was a fairly tame affair that went straight into the arms of Juan Pablo. A couple of minutes later and Tenerife had their first real chance of the game when a shot from the left side of the Cadiz box went across the face of Contreras and finished a yard wide of the far post. In the 29th minute los amarillos had another quick break out from the back and it was Natalio again who had the ball at his feet just inside the visitors half. He raced forward and chose to shoot instead of playing Enrique in, who was free on the right, but his curling effort finished just over the bar from 25 yards out. A couple of minutes later and the biggest threat to Cadiz conceding happened when Caneda took far too long to clear the ball away from danger and as he dwelt on the ball his attempt at a clearance was charged down by Blanco and the ball bounced free just ahead of the Tenerife player with just Contreras to beat. Thankfully for Cadiz and Caneda in particular Blanco took too long to decide on a shot or a cross across goal, which gave Caneda time to get back and block the shot/cross from Blanco and put it behind for a corner. With the first half drawing to an end the visitors were having their best spell of the game and in the 37th minute they had their best effort of the half when a shot from distance flew goalwards but was straight at Contreras who had little trouble in dealing with the danger. Cadiz came back and with just three minutes to half time the best chance of the game fell again to Dani, when Natalio slipped a super ball through the Tenerife defense for Dani to run onto but he took a quick look across to the linesman to check that he was onside and that slight delay gave Juanma time to get back and pull off a great block as Dani finally got his shot away to keep the score at 0-0 at the end of the first half.
This was a good display by los amarillos which deserved a bumper goalfest that the Carnaval weekend was screaming out for and more importantly a vital three points. Unfortunately it was not to be but there were times when they looked like a team that should be challenging for the division title. The new signings showed well with Natalio the man of the match, Kosowski had some good touches and put in one great cross that could have resulted in a goal and Bangoura almost scored on his debut and made some super instinctive runs into danger areas, which at the moment came to nothing, but as his team mates get on the same wave length he should be knocking a good few goals in.
