Cadiz
were beaten for the first time in four meetings against their Andalusian
neighbours Sevilla this season. Esparrago kept faith with what appears to be his
favourite starting XI at the moment.
In the first leg of the cup game against Sevilla, Cadiz
raced into a 3-0 lead before the introduction of Kanoute who scored two goals in
reply, and the Frenchman was again the main problem for the home defence. After
a reasonably solid start, Cadiz were undone with a simple route one goal. The
ball was hoofed down field by Palop, Kanoute out-jumped the home defence and
flicked the ball on to strike partner Saviola, who volleyed the ball expertly
passed Armando from the edge of the box. Five minutes gone and 0-1, the game
plan would have to change. Unfortunately Cadiz still looked vulnerable in the
air after the goal. Barely five minutes later a corner was headed past Armando,
but the referee spotted a slight push in the box and handed Cadiz a life line.
Unfortunately the midfield struggled to keep much possession and Sevilla looked
the more comfortable. Medina found himself isolated up front and Estoyanoff and
Sesma struggled to provide any width. The only threat Cadiz offered was from
dead balls, and in fairness to Estoyanoff though he struggled on the right wing
he did deliver several corners and free-kicks into good areas, although
unfortunately despite Palop losing the flight of one Cadiz couldn’t find the
equalizer.
After
a rather dull first half Esparrago introduced Lobos and Enrique for Sesma and
Estoyanoff, with Nenad Mirosavljevic moving to the left wing. The substitutions
added fresh life to the Cadiz attack and they started brightly. Lobos looked
lively but the home team struggled to create chances, and as they pushed forward
Kanoute, Saviola and Navas found more space on the break. In the 72nd
minute the match was over as a contest. A fine cross from Daniel Alves found
Puerta who headed past Armando to wrap up the three points. Cadiz gamely fought
on but in all honesty they never looked like getting anything from the game from
the moment they went one down. Palop had a few dangerous crosses to deal with
but disappointingly he didn’t really have a save to make in the match. Kepa
and Kanoute added two late goals to put a slightly unfair look to the scoreline,
but Cadiz can have no complaints at the loss. Hopefully this will not end the
mini revival they have had since the turn of the year, and with Cadiz right in
the middle of a group of seven clubs separated by six points at the bottom of La
Liga, they will need to improve in next weeks home clash against Osasuna.
