Not
too many surprises in the team selection tonight as Mansilla replaces the
suspended Fragoso in the heart of the defence and Abraham replaces the suspended
Erice in midfield. The final selection is something unexpected as Cortes starts
from the bench with Lopez Silva moving in field with Nano replacing him down the
left wing. Cadiz were ready for their high flying opponents to start strongly so
they commenced pretty defensively allowing the home side room to press forward
but this ploy restricted Numancia to a couple of distant shots, firstly after 8
minutes from Velez and then a few minutes later from Del Pino but neither effort
caused Casilla any worries. Gradually after weathering the initial storm Cadiz
started passing the ball around and moved further upfield with Lopez Silva
getting a shot away from inside the area on the quarter hour but his effort was
blocked. Then in the 22nd minute the first goal came and it was for los
amarillos, when a well practiced play down the right saw Enrique, at last, get a
good cross over into the box and there was the Argentinian, Toedtli, to make no
mistake and make it 0-1. A few minutes later and Nano beat Eduardo, the Numancia
keeper, but Balenciaga managed to clear the effort as it looked as if the lead
was going to be doubled. Another effort from Cristiam clipped the outside of the
post with Eduardo looking beaten and it wasn´t until the final minutes of the
first half when Del Pino crossed for Velez to get a good head on the ball but
Casilla was well placed and fairly easily dealt with the danger and the half
ended with Cadiz one up.
It
was Cadiz who started strongly in the second half and the impressive Toedtli
fired in a good shot from the edge of the area that took a deflection. Then in
the 53rd minute another good service from the right by Enrique was converted by
Nano to make it 0-2 to the visitors. Going two up los amarillos started looking
and playing with confidence and they were playing the home side off the park and
surely it was only a matter of time before they added to their tally of goals.
The third came in the 68th minute when Eduardo kicked the ball out poorly and it
was intercepted by Nano, who quickly played the ball back across to Enrique who
had no trouble in slotting home to make it 0-3. Still Cadiz poured forward and
Cristian was unlucky not to convert a cross from Lopez Silva but the right backs
header was wide of the mark. With the points looking safe the final minutes
however saw the home side start playing with some pride and looking to reduce
the deficit and they pulled one back with still some 6 minutes left to play when
Velez fired in a shot from inside the area that flew past Casilla to make it
1-3. In the final minute of normal time Alvaro Silva was adjudged to have
brought down Velez in the box and so Numancia were awarded a penalty. Up stepped
Barkero to take the spot kick but Casilla guessed right and was able to block
the effort and the game ended with los amarillos taking a well deserved three
points. The main reason that the team are in the position that they are today is
because of the poor service from the wings and yet today with the service vastly
improved, all three goals coming from assists from the wide players and the
wingers also getting two of the goals, why were the same players not doing it
before for the manager?
