GAME
Cadiz
were held at home by fellow relegation candidates Racing Santander in Saturdays
early kick-off. De La Cuesta joined Berizzo in the heart of the defence in place
of De Quintana, whilst the same midfield and attack that played last week in
Madrid returned after the midweek cup exit at Espanyol.
Cadiz started brightly and Santander
dropped deep suggesting they were hoping to defend and take a point from the
game. Benjamin almost opened the scoring early on, but his right foot shot from
outside the box hit the foot of the post. With Cadiz dominating the first
quarter of an hour, Racing started to press higher up the pitch, and Matabuena
had their first opportunity with a free header in the box but fortunately he
couldn’t hit the target. The home side hit straight back, good work from
Mirosavljevic led to an opening for Estoyanoff, but his effort went agonisingly
wide. As the game slowed down, Cadiz kept good possession, and on the half hour
mark Sesma should have done better when presented with an opportunity, but he
took too long and allowed Oriol to recover. The game drifted on to half time
with not much action, although the home side were still trying to play football.
The
second half started in much the same vain, and like the first half Benjamin had
the first sight of goal, but he couldn’t convert after more fine play from
Mirosavljevic. Then, with Cadiz having more of the ball and controlling the
game, Santander were awarded a penalty. Matabuena didn’t look to have control
of the ball, and as the defenders appealed for a booking for his theatrical
dive, the referee decided after much thought that it should be a penalty. Melo
made no mistake from the spot, and it looked as though once again Cadiz would
lose at home after dominating. But since the turn of the year, the team has
shown much resilience, and with the introduction of Lucas Lobos the team took
the match straight back to Racing. Fellow sub Fleurquin then found right back
Raul Lopez, and he smashed the ball into the bottom corner for a much deserved
equaliser. The match petered out without any more real chances, and whilst a win
would have taken Cadiz level with their visitors, they must take heart from the
comeback from 0-1 and the point gained.
