Cadiz earned their first three points since their return to the Primera Liga with a 1-0 win away at Santander thanks to a late Jonathan Sesma header. Esparrago named an unchange side from that which started against Real Madrid last week, with Pavoni again playing off Oli up front and Suarez partnering Fleurquin in the centre of the pitch. Despite the low scoreline, both teams had plenty of scoring chances, and its testament to both defences that only one goal was scored.  Cadiz started brightly, and most of the good work going forward was created on the right, where Enrique and the over-lapping Varela combined to good effect. Despite a few half chances, the best falling to midfielder Suarez, it was the home team that had the best chance of the first half. Marqués did well down the right before centering for Aganzo, but his effort towards the left hand post was brilliantly kept out by Armando. Cadiz won some corners and upped the pressure as the game approached half time. In the 43rd minute, Enrique swung a corner in which was flicked on by Pavoni, and as Fleurquin sent an effort goalwards the ball was blocked by a defender wide for another corner. From the resulting cross, Raul Lopez sent a powerful shot goal bound but Auoate saved comfortably. After more good work from Enrique he crossed for Oli on the stroke of half time, but despite the captains agonizing reach, he was unable to connect.

Santander came out for the second half and took only 3 minutes to create a chance. Dalmat centered for sub Raúl but he failed to test Armando. As the game passed the hour mark, Antoñito tested Armando with a fierce left foot shot, but still the game remained locked at 0-0. The breakthrough came for Cadiz after Estoyanoff had come on down the right, and after Auoate could only parry his goalbound shot, the ball bounced favourably for Sesma to head into an empty net. With just minutes remaining, Santander threw everything forward in the hope of an equaliser, but good defending meant they were restricted to half chances.

The win may turn out to be vital against a team who are also expected to be in the lower part of the league come May, and with a tricky looking match at home to Champions League new boys Villareal followed by a midweek derby at Sevilla, the first three points of the season will be a welcome boost for the club and their fanatical fans.
