Cadiz gained a much needed three points with an injury time winner against fellow Andalucians and promotion hopefuls Malaga. Fleurquin returned from suspension to replace Bezares in midfield, ironically missing himself due to a one match ban for picking up five yellow cards this term. The only other change saw Sesma return in place of Nano on the left wing.

As is so often the case, Cadiz started brightly at home and were strongly backed by the partisan crowd, who seemed to have been whipped into a frenzy by the large Malaga support prior to kick off.  Uruguayans Fleurquin and Medina had the first two chances of the game. Some fine play down the left wing from Lucas Lobos ended with a cross to Fleurquin, who could only head over Arnau’s goal. Medina was even closer, when in the 12th minute Raul Lopez and Pablo combined to create havoc in the Malaga six yard box before Medina headed against the bar from a near impossible angle. The match evened out with neither midfield taking control. De Quintana then came close to an uncharacteristic goal, when the tall centre back who scores his fair share of headers was unlucky to see a 25 yard volley deflect wide with Arnau in trouble. Hidalgo then forced Armando into a smart save when he hit the target from distance, and just before half time Sesma should probably have done better at the far post when a cross was fizzed across goal.

At half time the 0-0 scoreline came as no surprise to many in the ground – the last goal seen in the Carranza (not including a Romanian goal against the Spanish national team) was scored by Nano in the 13th minute of the Numancia game – on 29th October!

Malaga started the second half the better team, and this was mainly due to the impressive work of Trueba and sub Popo in midfield who retained possession well. Miguel Garcia nearly snatched the lead for Cadiz with what would surely have been goal of the season, but his 70 yard ‘lob’ from inside his own half cleared both the helpless Arnau and unfortunately the cross bar by a couple of feet. De Quintana then headed over in the following attack, and in the process broke his nose in a clash of heads. Velazquez came on at right back, Vella switched to the left and Raul Lopez slotted into the centre, with the unfamiliar new look partnership of Raul Lopez and Caneda in for the injured De Quintana and Paz. A decision is yet to be made if De Quintana will be fit enough to play in Madrid for the final game of the first half of the season, if not youngster Chico could find himself thrown in at the deep end alongside Caneda. De Paula replaced Pablo in an attacking move from Gonzalez, but the initial reaction lead to Malaga finding more space and Popo forced Armando into a smart save which he gathered at the second attempt. With the game heading towards a draw, Caneda pumped a long free kick down the left, and as the ball broke to Lobos on the edge of the area, his scuffed volley deflected in off a hapless defender at the far post. Lobos will try and claim the goal but without the defenders unintentional intervention its unlikely Arnau would have been troubled.

With the league table being so tight three points is more important than a good performance at the moment, but with the team unbeaten since Jose Gonzalez’s appointment as manager then all at Cadiz will hope the team can kick on in the second half of the season and overhaul the five point gap from the promotion places.
