The
starting line up was the same as started the last game against Gimnastic. All
the Cadistas were hoping for the perfect gift on the night of the three Kings
with a victory against their Andalucian rivals and second in the table, Malaga.
Regrettably it started badly when Contreras was the first Cadiz player to get a
touch of the ball when he picked the ball out of the net after just 15 seconds
had elapsed. From the kick off the ball went to the visitors right wing to
Calleja who pumped the ball across to the centre of the pitch about 20 yards
from the Cadiz goal where Salva outjumped Paz to nod the ball on and it went to
the feet of Baha, who had sneaked the wrong side of Cristian, and fired the ball
low to the right of Contreras and into the back of the net to make 0-1. Despite
this setback los amarillos pushed forward with all they could muster and looked
particularly dangerous down the right band where Cristian was working well with
Enrique and it was this duo who created the first chance for Cadiz when Cristian
ran through after a one two with Enrique and fired a shot in that went wide of
the mark. Moments later and the captain, Fleurquin, ran onto a ball and
unleashed a powerful shot from 25 yards out that just went high over the bar.
The next chance fell to Bezares who powered into the box and shot from wide of
the goal into the side netting when maybe a better option would have been to
clip the ball back across goal where Dani and Nano were lurking.
Malaga still looked dangerous on the break and in the 14th minute Salva had
the ball in the net after it had been thrown in from the right and bounced
passed everyone in the area but fortunately the referees assistant had noticed
an infringement against one of the Cadiz players and the goal was ruled out.
Cadiz came fighting back and created plenty of chances but without really
troubling Goitia, in the Malaga goal with a header from Enrique and a shot from
Parri both missing the target. Then Paz was upended in the area but despite
calls for a penalty the referee waved play on. Next in the 35th minute Goitia
was called to action when good play down the right by Cristian saw his cross
volleyed superbly goalwards by Enrique but the Malaga stopper was up to the
challenge as he dived to his left to turn the ball round for a corner. The final
moments of the first half saw two chances, albeit fairly difficult, fall to Nano
to the left of the goal but on both occasions he lifted the ball high over the
bar with his left foot efforts.
At the
start of the second half Calderon made his intentions known when he threw on the
attacking pair of Casas and Gustavo Lopez for Bezares and Nano and what a
difference it made with the two Lopezes, Raul and Gustavo, causing havoc down
the left in the same way that Cristian and Enrique were doing on the right.
Despite the superior play from Cadiz the final ball on many occasions was just
not good enough and many of the attacks were just too easily dealt with by the
packed Malaga defense. On the rare occasions when the ball got through into the
box it was Dani who was attacking the ball but twice he was just out of reach of
the ball as it cut across him. It seemed that Enrique was the most likely to
score as he had another great effort well saved by Goitia. With twenty minutes
left Malaga were reduced to ten men when Gamez picked up his second yellow card
after 'fouling' Raul Lopez as he powered towards the Malaga area. From that
moment on it was all one way traffic and in the final ten minutes Abraham Paz
played just behind Casas as los amarillos desperately searched for at least one
goal. Fleurquin came close when he headed the ball goalwards but it was just too
high and landed on top of the net and then as time was running out Paz passed to
Parri who played in Enrique and his cross was inches away from the advancing
Dani. Despite all the possession and great passing play Cadiz were unable to get
that all important goal and the visitors from Malaga continue their quest for
promotion with a very thankful three points.
This was another tremendous performance from Cadiz but their lack of
goalpower was really evident and against a strong team like Malaga once they
went behind it was always going to be difficult to get back on terms. Next up is
a tough trip to Sevilla Athletico but on this performance tonight against a
strong Malaga side there is no reason why Cadiz cannot get up into the promotion
places by the end of the season.
