BACK TO FIXTURES & RESULTS PREVIOUS GAME NEXT GAME
The starting eleven saw a few changes, as De Quintana took over the captaincy from Paz, currently undergoing an operation to fix a long running knee problem. Fleurquin was suspended, with Bezares coming into the centre of midfield, whilst Nano and new boy Pablo occupied the wings, behind Alex Medina who came in for De Paula up front. Cadiz started strongly and looked to continue their promising unbeaten run. Early on Vellas promising cross from the right found Lobos in a yard of space but his header went the wrong side of the near post. Shortly after that Lobos did well to win the ball as Elche tried to run the ball out of defence, and although this time his shot was the right side of the near post Caballero pushed the ball wide for a corner. Medina had a couple of half chances whilst Armando made some regulation saves from hopeful long shots at the other end. Somewhat against the run of play the home side took the lead, when an in-swinging corner from the right found a cluster of players on the edge of the six yard box, with Fernando Niño rising highest to nod the ball past Armando. The setback didn’t deter Cadiz from their game plan of using Pablo and Nano to try and get crosses into the box, and they continued creating chances as a result. Miguel nearly crept in to make it 0-2 but couldn’t connect well enough on a super cross, but that was the only other time Elche threatened in the half. Cadiz continued attacking well and Nano swung over a fine freekick, which Caneda was unlucky to see his header rebound straight back from off the near post. Moments later a near identical free-kick from Nano found De Quintana in a similar position, but this time the stand in skipper made no mistake with his header which went the right side of the post to level the scores. There was still time for Lobos to force Caballero into punching away his volley, and at half time 1-1 was the least the visitors deserved. Cadiz were then dealt a blow early in the second half, when Nano flicked home a Lobos freekick only for the linesman to rule the goal out for offside. TV replays seem to suggest that the wingers run was timed to perfection and it looked a harsh decision. Jaoquin’s introduction for Elche on the right wing sparked the home team into life briefly, firstly when Miguel somehow headed over the wingers fine cross and then when another of the subs crosses led to penalty appeals for pushing at the far post against Caneda, which were turned down. Medina was then unlucky with a good volley from a tight angle which needed a firm hand from the keeper, before his replacement De Paula just failed to connect when Caballero raced out to claim a through ball. Fernando Niño almost added to his tally with a header at the far post when unmarked from a freekick, but Armando made a fine acrobatic save to push the ball away from danger. Lobos then missed a gilt edged chance after De Paula did well and returned a pass to the Uruguayan, but his shot was straight at the keepers legs when the goal was open. Fellow sub Enrique then laid the ball across for De Paula to slot home from the penalty spot, but the ball sat up for the striker who’s attempt at placing the ball ended up with the ball flying yards over the bar. A point wasn’t a bad result, and the unbeaten run under Jose Gonzalez now stretches back 8 matches, but with 6 of those matches ending in draws, the manager has reiterated the importance of winning home games. If the promotion push is going to gather pace, a win against fellow Andalucians, Malaga in the Carranza this Sunday is a must.
