Cadiz earned a much needed three points against fellow strugglers Malaga to climb away from the bottom three and maintain their unbeaten start to 2006. With the home league win against Getafe, and the two legged victory over Sevilla, the amarillos have started to find some form and the improvement in the league has undoubtedly been down to the cup run. For the first few weeks of the season Esparrago picked the same team week after week, but since other squad members have impressed in the Copa del Rey, competition for places is hotting up and the performances in the league have improved drastically. De La Cuesta, Berizzo, and Medina started, as did Benjamin and Bezares, who seem to forging a solid partnership in the middle of the park. Mirosavljevic kept his place up front while Oli was joined by fellow striker and new recruit Lucas Lobos on the bench.

Cadiz started well, and Enrique almost opened the scoring early on after fine midfield play created a half chance. The 500 travelling fans didn’t have to wait long though, as a nice team move ended with Jonathan Sesma’s cross towards Medina. The ball went in, and despite furious protests from the home team, who claimed handball, the goal was given. The fans were livid at the decision, and although Malaga looked to fight back immediately, Cadiz soon regained the initiative and looked the more likely to score the second goal. Enrique twice inspired chances, once with a shot of his own and secondly when he almost found Mirosavljevic. The pressing in midfield was causing Malaga problems, especially in the 37th minute when Cesar Navas was robbed in the middle of the park. Sesma raced free and found Medina, who finished the move for his second goal of the game. Far from settling for their two goal lead, Cadiz almost extended their lead before the break, but Mirosavljevic ballooned the ball over the bar when he had a half chance.

Malaga threw everything forward after the break, but rarely threatened Armando as the defence held firm. The match was all but sealed on the hour, when sub Antonio Lopez, who had been booked on the bench in the first half, picked up a second yellow card after he had come on at half time. The visitors held firm and defended well whilst looking dangerous on the counter attack – much like the success they enjoyed last year in the promotion from the Segunda A. There was even time to introduce new boy Lucas Lobos, and although the game was petering out, he showed many glimpses of the quality which persuaded Esparrago to part with €1.8 million.

The final whistle marked the end of the first half of the season, with Cadiz now having played every team once. With a return of 20 points, they are outside of the relegation zone, and should they maintain their current run of performances, Cadiz fans everywhere will be hopeful they can finish the season in a similar position. After the first leg of the quarter finals, against Espanyol on Wednesday, a trip to the Bernabeu is the next test for Cadiz. If they continue to defend superbly and break at speed, they will be quietly confident of giving the Galacticos a decent game.
