BACK TO FIXTURES & RESULTS PREVIOUS GAME NEXT GAME
The home side came out strongly passing the ball to feet at speed but the Cadiz defense held up well and were able to deal with the onslaught with ease. As the game settled down los amarillos were able to put together its own good passages of attacking play but these were also easily crushed by the home defense and neither side really had any good opportunities on goal until the final few minutes of the half. In the 38th minute a good swift break from the back by Cadiz found Cristian racing down the right wing and putting over a great ball into the area just 5 yards out that Dani was millimetres away from connecting with his desperate lunge to try and knock the ball home. Then in the 42nd minute it was the turn of Gimnastic to go even closer when they won a corner on the left but the corner kick flew long and bounced out to the right wing where a Gimnastic player collected it and put in a cross to the 6 yard line that Mairata met with purpose but his powerful header smashed against the bar and bounced away for the Cadiz defense to clear and the score remained 0-0 at half time.
Next it was Gimnastic to break and the ball was in an almost identical position on the left of the Cadiz box when it was pulled back for Mikus earlier effort but this time, although the ball was pulled back to the same spot, Bezares was there to boot the ball behind for a corner. Within two minutes Enrique was found just outside the area and he came in onto his wrong foot and fired in a strong left footed effort that flew inches wide with Roberto well beaten. In the 75th minute came the sending off of Abel Buades, who played for Cadiz last season, when he tripped Enrique and picked up his second yellow card of the game to give los amarillos a numerical superiority for the final fifteen minutes. Shortly afterwards Antonio Calderon showed his intentions to go away with all three points when he put on Gaston Casas up front and took off midfielder, Parri. Gimnastic however weren't going to make it easy for the visitors and just four minutes after going down to ten men they won a free kick twenty yards out in front of goal but the resultant shot at goal was high and dropped over the bar as Contreras watched it all the way. With just five minutes left of normal time Raul Lopez put in a great cross with his right foot that found Dani at the far post but his header was too high. Then in the 87th minute a great break by Bezares took him from inside his own half up to the edge of the Gimnastic box before he slid the ball to his right to Enrique who swiftly put the ball over to the far post where a defender managed to get his head to it but without getting any distance on the clearance. Dani was quick to turn and collect the loose ball bouncing in the area and he tried to swivel and fire the ball home but he could only miskick the ball and see it bounce to Casas, standing just yards out straight in front of the goal, and he had no problem in controlling the ball and slotting it home to make it 0-1 for Cadiz. As los amarillos celebrated the goal the home side remonstrated with the referee and his assistant claiming that Casas was offside but their pleas were waved away and the goal stood. In the time added on Roberto was forced to dive to his left to keep out a good effort from Gustavo Lopez and then Contreras was called into action to boot the ball clear when it was in a very dangerous position and he then had to look on as a final effort from Pinilla flew just over his bar to keep the score at one nil to Cadiz. This was a great result against a very impressive Gimnastic who played at speed and to feet and appear to be a much better side than their position in the table would suggest. This result gives Cadiz 5 wins, 2 draws and one loss in the last eight games, picking up 17 points out of a possible 24 and scoring 12 goals against 7 and pushes them further up the table, within shouting distance of the promotion places. The final three games of the first half of the season are against three of the teams who are currently ahead of Cadiz in the table and so points won against these teams will definitely put Cadiz within reach of the promotion fight. First up is the home encounter against local Andalucian side Malaga during Three Kings weekend, followed by a trip to another Andalucian rival, Sevilla Athletico and then the last home match against Hercules.
