Cadiz recorded a much needed victory at home to Getafe as both teams finished with ten men. Esparrago rewarded many of his midweek cup heroes with rare Liga starts after they had beaten fellow Andalusians Sevilla 3-2 in the Copa Del Rey in midweek. Berizzo, Mario Silva, Bezares, Benjamin, Medina and Estoyanoff all took their place on the pitch at kick off, whilst Mirosavljevic replaced Oli upfront after his goals against Barcelona and Sevilla in recent weeks. With Cadiz languishing second from bottom, the players looked hungry from the outset and the home side flew out of the blocks. Medina was the first with a glimpse of Calatayud’s goal, but he sent his effort into the stands. Then Estoyanoff almost set up Mirosavljevic for a header, whilst Enrique, who was one of the players able to get back into the team, missed the target. Getafe then showed why they are in the top half of the table, and started to take control of the match. As they started to dominate, the home fans had to rely on individual skill to create chances, which Enrique, Estoyanoff and Medina almost did. The match was petering out, until it burst into life just before the half hour mark. First Riki broke with speed for the visitors, and when he squared for Pachon it seemed the team from Madrid were about to make it 0-1. Fortunately though Pachon skied his effort. Cadiz then broke, and when Varela tried to centre, Matellan raised his hands to give away a soft penalty. Mirosvaljevic took the responsibility upon himself and sent the keeper the wrong way to score his 3rd goal in four games. Cadiz took heart from the goal and regained the upper hand, but while they were unable to create further chances, they were fortunate to head in 1-0 up after Riki’s header grazed the woodwork.

Neither team started well in the second half, and Cadiz looked nervous with their one goal lead. Mirosavljevic almost changed that with a sublime pass to Estoyanoff, but the Uruguayan took too long and allowed Calatayud to close him down. As both midfields struggled to keep possession, both teams looked for the longer ball, but where unable to create any chances. The referee was kept busy though, and booked 4 players from each team, as well as reducing both teams to ten men in the 80th minute. Estoyanoff and Berenguer were both already on yellow cards before they clashed, earning them both second cautions. It didn’t create extra space as may have been expected, and the home team held on well for a much needed home win. Cadiz now have three away games in a row, the return leg of the cup in Seville, a tricky away match at fellow Andalusians and strugglers Malaga, and the daunting trip to the Bernabeu to face Real Madrid. With some kind results though Cadiz moved out of the bottom three as Malaga, Bilbao, Alaves, Espanyol, Santander, Mallorca and Betis all failed to win.
