The
poor league form continued for Cadiz as they lost 2-0 at Real Sociedad in their
last game of 2005. Marc Bertran came in at right back for Varela, whilst Raul
Lopez returned to left back. Estoyanoff also started up front in place of Oli.
Unfortunately Cadiz got off to the worst possible start. Bertrans mistake let in
Gabilondo for a clear run through on goal, and he gave Armando no chance with a
cool finish. It would have been easy for the visitors to crumble after such an
early gift but they fought back well. First Enrique put in a dangerous cross
after great work on the right, and then later De Quintana headed tamely at
Riesgo. However Sociedad responded well and took control of the game, with the
Cadiz midfield seeming nonexistent as any possession was kicked long for Pavoni
and Estoyanoff to chase. During this spell Jáuregui and Uranga had chances to
double the lead, but they couldn’t find the back of the net. Fleurquin then
forced a superb save from Riesgo with a close range header as Cadiz started
retaining possession again. Pavoni and Enrique worked well to almost carve out a
chance, but unfortunately as so often has been the case this year no-one was
there to finish the move off.
The first 20 minutes of the second half
were instantly forgettable, with neither team creating any chances of note. That
changed when Pavoni was shown a second yellow card, and Cadiz lost their best
player of the night. Esparrago threw on Oli and Mirosavljevic as the ten men
desperately searched for an equaliser, but their hopes were dashed when referee
Rubinos Perez gave a harsh penalty against Fleurquin. Xavi Prieto, the best
Sociedad player of the match, made no mistake from 12 yards and effectively
ended the contest with just over ten minutes to go. Sociedad looked the more
likely to score and extend their lead, but they couldn’t add a third.
This was definitely one of the worst performances
of the season, and as Cadiz drop into the relegation zone, we can only hope 2006
will bring better performances and luck for los amarillos.
