On
an unusually cold Saturday evening league leaders, Valladolid, came to the
Carranza to meet the mighty Cadiz, who the previous week had hammered the then
league leaders and local rivals, Xerez, 4-1 away. It was obvious from the start
that Valladolid had come to
frustrate Cadiz and seemed happy with a point.
In the opening quarter it was clear that Valladolid, were looking to try and
control the ball and the match through a hard working midfield. Cadiz tried to
spread the play by using the width of Sesma and Lucas Lobos but without much
success. Nevertheless the best chances for the home side came from dead ball
situations. Firstly in the 11th minute a free kick by Miguel Garcia
was headed goalwards by Fleurquin, which Alberto, in the Valladolid goal, could
only parry and Sesma was first to the loose ball but he could only fire the ball
over the bar. Then in the 29th minute Lucas Lobos took another free
kick into the area where Fleurquin and Paz battled against Alberto and in the
melee for the loose ball it was put into the net by Paz, however the referee
ruled that Paz had handled the ball and not only ruled the goal out but also
booked the Cadiz captain. The best chances that fell to Valladolid all came
through the play of the impressive, Sisi, who went past 2 defenders and put in a
telling cross to the far post but there were no team mates following up and the
ball was easily cleared by the solid Cadiz defence.
In
the second half Cadiz came out, as they had done the week before at the Chapin,
eagerly looking for the goal that would break the deadlock. Within a few minutes
of the restart Enrique took the ball into the Valladolid area and was bundled
over but as the fans called for a penalty the referee waved away the Cadiz
players and gave a corner. Minutes later Enrique, the best Cadiz player in the
second half, was fouled by the Valladolid defender, Vicente, who was yellow
carded for the second time and sent off. With the visitors down to ten men Jose
Gonzalez put on Acuņa and Medina and played with just 3 defenders. The best
chance for Cadiz came from a cross by Miguel Garcia, which was headed on by
Cesar Caneda but the effort came to nothing. Despite their numerical superiority
Cadiz were unable to breech the Valladolid defence.
Valladolid
did have a couple of efforts as a result of long balls played up towards
Llorente and on one of these occasions he was fouled on the edge of the area.
Oscar Sanchez took a quick free kick hoping to catch Armando off guard but the
Cadiz stopper was fully aware and had no problems with the effort. The biggest
fright for the keeper however was to take place with just 5 minutes left when a
poor clearance in the Cadiz area fell to Asier with only Armando to beat.
Thankfully the striker fired over and the game finished all square.
Although
the lack of goals at home causes some anxiety the team continue to play well
under the new manager and good results against lesser opponents in the next two
games before the mid season break could see Cadiz handily placed for a strong
push for promotion in the second half of the season.
