Cadiz remain unbeaten after a third consecutive draw under Jose Gonzalez but are still waiting for an elusive win for their new manager. Cesar Caneda moved across to centre back in place of injured captain Paz, whilst Moran started in place of Lucas Lobos who was not 100% after the knock to the knee he sustained last week in Murcia. With the Fondo Norte being demolished last week ready for the new stand to be built, a temporary structure was erected to house season ticket holders and the promising start made by the home side ensured the atmosphere in the ground was as vocal as usual. As early as the second minute the tenacious Bezares won the ball in midfield and fed Vella wide on the right, his deep cross was almost perfect but unfortunately De Paula headed over when under pressure. Then an outswinging corner was only half cleared to Enrique, who had one touch on his knee before volleying an awkward shot just wide as he lost balance. Unlike previous encounters at the Carranza the visitors looked to try and match Cadiz by keeping possession instead of getting ten men behind the ball and frustrating the home team, and that seemed to help los amarillos. All that changed though in the 36th minute, when Sunday miskicked a cleared Ejido corner. As he ran back with Enrique he caught the winger with a flailing arm, and despite very little protest from Enrique the referee showed Sunday a straight red card. As is often the case in football the sending off actually raised Ejido, and after a succession of corners at the end of the half Pedro Vega unleashed a stunning volley from range that was superbly kept out by Armando – a much needed confidence booster for the stand in captain after the calls for Limia to return between the sticks after last weeks mistake gifted Murcia a point in the dying minutes. On the stroke of half time Enrique slotted a ball through the inside left channel but De Paula’s tame left foot shot was easily held by Kike.
Whilst the final whistle was greeted by some whistles in the crowd, there is no doubt that the team look much more solid than it did a few weeks ago, and once a couple of goals fly in hopefully the team will get back to winning ways and close the gap on the top three. There will be no better place to start than El Chapin on Sunday against neighbours and league leaders Xerez, who scraped a point in a remarkable game at 7 man Almeria. Former Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld conceded a penalty which earned him the fifth red card of the game as he handed his gloves to an outfield team-mate who could do nothing to stop the penalty with the last kick of the game.
