GAME
As
has been so often the case in the Carranza this season, Cadiz outplayed their
opponents and came away with nothing to show for their superiority.
De La Cuesta replaced Paz at the center of defence, and Ivan Ania came in
for Jonathan Sesma in the only other change from the eleven that has started
most games this season.
Cadiz started brightly, and had the vast
majority of possession in the early stages.
Good all round play from both Varela and Raul Lopez early on allowed Ivan
Ania and Enrique to push further down the flanks, and as is so often the case
for Cadiz it was the wide areas that caused most problems for the visitors.
Cadiz had an early effort chalked off for
offside. Ivan Ania curled in a freekick towards the far post, and although it
eluded everyone and crept in past César, the offside attackers had put the
keeper off and the goal was rightly disallowed. It wasn’t long until the
deadlock was broken though. Suárez broke forward and linked well with Oli,
before the ball was clipped over the center backs for the on-rushing Enrique,
who had momentarily switched positions with Pavoni. His first touch knocked the
ball past César, and he was left with a header into the empty net. 1-0 after 16
minutes, but despite the joy from the stands and the good start, everyone in the
ground sensed that another goal would be needed after the previous home matches.
Enrique then found himself clean through on the right, but instead of
pulling the ball back he tried to thread the ball past the keeper at the near
post, but the ball was cleared for a corner. As the good play continued, Oli
almost doubled the lead with some nice skill and a super volley which flew just
wide, although it wouldn’t have counted anyway as the linesman had flagged for
offside. With the last action of
the first half, Ivan Ania broke down the left and was inches away from finding
Pavoni as his cross was fizzed across the six yard box. A super 45 minutes was
brought to a close in what has to be one of the most one-sided first halves of
the season.
The visitors came back on to the pitch after an obvious
ear bashing from their manager, and after their dismal showing Zaragoza made two
changes. There seemed to be a greater sense of urgency in the visitors play, and
in the first minutes after the restart they had a goal disallowed after a tight
offside. With the match now more even Esparrago bought on Bezares to replace Suárez
in the center of the pitch. The game then turned on its head in barely 60
seconds. First Some sloppy defending allowed Cani to unleash an optimistic shot
towards goal from 30 yards towards the bottom corner. Despite it being low and
powerful, Armando managed to get a hand to it but the ball crept in. Perhaps he
will feel he may have done better. Then with the crowd still shaking their heads
in disbelief, more sloppy defending allowed Ewerthon to volley goalwards, and
such is the way things are going for the unfortunate Cadiz at the moment, the
ball looped over Armando and went in off the bar. 1-0 to 1-2 in the space of 100
seconds. Whilst the home fans will continue to talk about luck not being on
their side, Cadiz need a goal scorer. Oli is a firm fans favourite and gives his
all for the club, but whether he can score enough goals to be considered
suitable for a lone striker in the primera liga remains to be seen. Therefore
the goals need to be topped up by the midfield, and for the second home game
running Pavoni missed an open goal which would have tied the game. It came in
the 79th minute. Sub Estoyanoff raced down the right and managed to
cut inside for a free run into the area. His pass across goal was inch perfect,
and as fellow sub Jonathan Sesma and Pavoni looked to both have tap ins, they
collided and from barely 2 yards Pavoni´s shot went inches wide. An
unbelievable miss but how long can Cadiz continue to miss these chances.
Thankfully a solid start to the season means they are still outside the
relegation zone, but with each loss
the gap closes, and it will surely be only a matter of time before Betis for one
start picking up more points now they wont have the champions league to occupy
their minds. With a trip to La Coruña followed by the visit of Barcelona, Cadiz
may find themselves towards the bottom of the table over the Christmas period,
especially if they continue to miss golden chances as they did today
