Cadiz earned a point after their short trip to Champions League team Real Betis ended in a 1-1 draw. Mirosavljevic came in for the suspended Oli, whilst De La Cuesta replaced Paz and Ivan Ania came in surprisingly for Argentine Pavoni.

The match started with the home team taking an early lead. Esparrago had warned his team about giving away free-kicks near to goal whilst playing against free-kick specialist Assunsao, but the first goal came in open play. The midfielder was found in the box after good work from Edu, and he made no mistake when firing low past Armando. One down inside 7 minutes against a team who have beaten Chelsea in the past month. The signs were looking ominous. As Betis grew in confidence Cadiz had to work hard to close down space, and despite much possession the home side didn’t have too many clear cut chances following their early goal.

The visitors chances were restricted to set plays, one involving Ivan Ania finding the side netting when many in the ground thought the ball had gone in. As the game progressed at 1-0, the home side started making sloppy mistakes and Cadiz grew as the game went on.

At the start of the second half they were further aided when Rivera was sent off for his second bookable offence after he fouled Enrique. Cadiz were visibly lifted, and Ivan Ania’s free-kick smacked against the woodwork as the visitors searched for the equaliser. A mistake by Arzu then let in sub Estoyanoff, but after a poor first touch Juanito recovered to clear the danger. Enrique then broke and centred for Sesma, but he headed at Doblas when under heavy pressure.

Esparrago brought on Manolo Perez and Pavoni as Cadiz continued to push Betis further back, and in the 72nd minute they were rewarded. Estoyanoff won the ball and sprinted through on goal, and as he went past Doblas the keeper brought him down, earning him a booking. Sub Manolo Perez converted the penalty despite the chorus of whistles from the home fans. With both teams looking for a win, spaces appeared all over the pitch, and despite some good work from Pavoni Cadiz struggled to deliver a final ball to open up the defence.  Estoyanoff and Pavoni both had half chances to win the game, but a draw was probably a fair result with Betis dominating the first half and Cadiz the second. The point away from home means Cadiz stay above Betis, and Los Amarillos will be hoping for a win when they welcome Zaragoza to the Carranza on Sunday.
