GAME
A few changes this week. Firstly Lopez Silva returns after his one match
suspension, with Nano returning to the bench. Enrique starts again replacing
Fran Cortes and finally, in a shock choice, Gracia gives Tristan his first
league start of the season. With the Carranza seeing the biggest crowd for some
time the game kicked off with expectations high for both sets of fans and it was
the home side who had the first chance when Caballero headed Enriques cross high
over the bar after just five minutes. A couple of minutes later and Cifuentes
tried a long shot that flew well over the bar again but the early signs were
looking good for los amarillos who were pressing forward well. Just after the
quarter hour Betis looked dangerous when Sergio Garcia put in a good cross that
Casilla punched away and Caballero hoofed the ball clear to relieve the pressure
on the Cadiz goal. In the 20th minute both Tristan and Ormazabal appeared to be
fouled on the edge of the Betis box but the referee gave nothing and appeared to
wave play on because Cadiz still had the ball however they soon lost it and
Betis broke quickly with the ball at the feet of Pavone to the left of the Cadiz
box and he easily got around Alvaro Silva, but the Cadiz centre back was quick
to recover and got a great tackle in on the Betis forward just as he was about
to shoot with just Casilla to beat. In another Betis attack the move was broken
down and Cifuentes was quick to pounce on the loose ball in his own half and he
raced forward with Lopez Silva running into space ahead of him and as he got to
the halfway line he played the ball to Lopez Silva who took it into the Betis
area and teased Damia before strolling past him and then he coolly slotted the
ball between the legs of Goitia, the Betis keeper, to make it 1-0 to Cadiz. The
cadistas went crazy and delighted in mocking the thousands of travelling Betis
fans, who almost seemed to outnumber the Cadiz fans in the Preferencia. However
the visitors almost drew level within a couple of minutes when a Cadiz
move was broken down and the ball was played forward to Pavone in space and he
fired a great shot that Casilla did well to block away to keep his team ahead.
With time running down to half time Alvaro Silva was called to action to leap
and clear a dangerous looking cross with a couple of Betis players waiting to
pounce behind him and so the half ended with Cadiz still with the advantage.
With Cadiz looking the better side in the first half it was the visitors who
started to take a bit more control from the start of the second half, although
los amarillos could have doubled their lead when Lopez Silva and Cristian
combined well down the right and Cristian crossed but Enrique was just unable to
get his head on the ball in front of goal. Just ten minutes into the half Rodri
went down on the edge of the Cadiz box and the referee blew for a foul by
Fragoso, although initial reactions from the stands were that the Betis forward
was already on the way down before the Cadiz defender was near him. Arzu fired
the ball into the Cadiz wall but the ball bounced loose into the Cadiz box and
Rodri was first to react and fire the ball past Casilla to make it all square at
1-1. Both sides went looking to score again and the match, although full of
excitement, got a bit scrappy. Ogbeche who had come on as soon as Betis had
equalised was looking lively up front and had a half chance that was blocked by
a defender but then in the 72nd minute Ormazabal burst forward and he was found
by Caballero and the Argentinian fired in a good shot that was straight at
Goitia, who had no trouble in collecting the effort. A few minutes later and the
visitors were ahead when the Cadiz back line tried to play an offside trap and
the ball was lifted over them to Pavone, who looked to be in an offside position
but the linesman indicated that Cristian was slow out and had played him on,
allowing the Betis forward to fire the ball home with just Casilla to beat
making it 1-2. This of course led to the Betis fans returning the mocking
compliments to the cadistas. Around about this time Gracia threw on Nano and
Toedtli to try and raise the team and get Cadiz back into the game. It certainly
worked with Nano looking like a completely different player to a few weeks ago,
he was showing a great turn of foot and confidently taking on players, on one
occasion he clipped a good cross that caused problems to the visiting defense
and then he followed that up with a super left foot shot across the face of the
goal that Goitia had to dive to tip the ball wide of the far post. In time added
on Lopez Silva put in cross from the right to the far post where Toedtli,
somehow managed to get his head to it and the ball went back in front of goal
where Ogbeche nodded it firmly home to make it 2-2 and the points were shared.
This was an excellent game full of atmosphere in front of a largely good
natured crowd and the draw was probably the fairest result.
