Cadiz came racing out of the stalls hoping to swiftly overpower their local rivals and in just the second minute Lobos squeezed past Verdes near the right touchline and raced towards the Xerez box before being hauled down by the chasing Verdes right on the line of the box and the referee pointed for a free kick just outside the box. Lobos rolled the ball to Lopez who blasted high and wide from a very acute angle. A few minutes later and Lobos won another free kick near the halfway line on the left, he took the kick himself but his cross was cleared behind for a corner. Lopez and Lobos worked a quick corner allowing Lobos to get to the byeline near the edge of the box unchallenged before he lifted the ball across the face of the goal towards the back post, where Paz had run into the space and volleyed the ball from just wide of the post with his right foot and saw the ball bounce through the keepers legs and into the back of the net to make it one nil to Cadiz in the 6th minute. Los amarillos kept up the pressure and in the 12th minute good work in midfield between Bezares and Enrique allowed Lobos to fire in a shot from 30 yards that beat the keeper but the ball glanced off the wrong side of the post. A couple of minutes later and Contreras had to be alert to smother a swift effort from Yordi but apart from that Cadiz looked to be in complete control at that stage and they soon had the ball in the net again when Casas finished off a pass from Enrique, but the goal was disallowed as Enrique was clearly in an offside position when he collected a short pass from Lobos. A minute later and Lobos again won a free kick near the right touchline but this time it was Enrique who took the kick. His cross into the area went into the crowd of players near the penalty spot and Porato, the Xerez keeper, came out to try and punch the ball away but he made little contact and the ball bounced free in front of goal, where Paz reacted, just ahead of Casas, to turn the ball in with his left foot from two yards out, to make it two nil to Cadiz.
Xerez started the second half as they had finished the first and a couple of times if the final ball had been a bit better placed they could have caused problems for Contreras and his defense. Gradually the game settled down with most of the play taking place in the middle of the park but in the 66th minute, just ten minutes after coming on, Nano had a great chance to make it safe for Cadiz but he headed wide from 8 yards out with just the keeper to beat. Two minutes later he found himself in a great position but he was unable to collect the pass and eventually made a mess of controlling it before it went off for a goal kick. Then in the space of two minutes Yordi managed to get his head to the ball ahead of De La Cuesta twice but he was unable to get any direction on his efforts and they both went behind to safety. In the 76th minute Xerez were awarded a free kick 20 yards out, which was tipped to De Coz, who raced up and fired a powerful low shot goalwards that managed to miss the onrushing Lobos and other defenders in its way but Contreras did well to fall onto the effort and keep hold of the ball. With time running out and as Xerez pressed further upfield Cadiz were able to capitalise on the spaces at the back and in the 87th minute Porato had to dive wide to his right to tip away a great effort from Lobos from 20 yards out that was arrowing towards the bottom corner of the goal. A minute later and the impressive Paz collected the ball from Contreras and saw Lobos free down the right and zipped a 40 yard pass for Lobos to run onto, Lobos collected the ball dummied the defender before putting in a perfect cross to the back post where Pavoni volleyed from 8 yards out that the Xerez keeper did extremely well to keep out and keep the score at 2-1, which is how the game finished. A great result for Cadiz, which will hopefully be the start of their season as they grow in confidence and start climbing the table. This was a good team performance with some exceptional individual displays, most notably, from Lobos, who seemed to relish the free reign given to him, from Rivas, who looks to be fitting in well and is now on the pace of the Segunda A, and finally, but by no means least, Paz, who is immense to the team, marshalling his troops from the back, play making with his long passes and with his goal scoring ability he looks to be the leading contender to be the top marksman for Cadiz this year. We hope that he will stay fit all season and be the first name on the teamsheet. We should all pray for peace (Paz is the Spanish word for peace).
