BACK TO FIXTURES & RESULTS PREVIOUS GAME NEXT GAME
Cadiz continued their poor start to the season with the loss of a remarkable game, which has proved to be Oli’s last as manager. Raul Lopez returned after suspension at left back, Acuna, Nano and Sesma were chosen to play behind lone striker De Paula. Lucas Lobos made a welcome return to the bench after his injury sustained in September in Tenerife.
After 20 minutes, few would have predicted that this would prove to be Oli’s final game in charge. After just four minutes De Paula almost opened the scoring, but Roberto in the Sporting goal managed to keep the ball out, albeit with some difficulty. In the 13th minute the deadlock was broken, Nano did well to cut in from the right, and when his low shot was only parried by Roberto, Sesma was on hand to smash home into the empty net with his weaker right foot. Four minutes later Nano was again the provider, this time his corner was headed home bravely by Cesar Caneda, who retained his place at right back. When De Paula was fouled in the box just minutes later, most in the ground thought the only question was how many the visitors would win by. However Paz’s spot kick crashed off the underside of the bar and Sporting spirits were raised. The home team launched a barrage of attacks on the Cadiz goal in an attempt to get back into the game. First Barral hit the base of the post, then seconds later a cross from the Cadiz right found the same player somehow with a free header in the middle of the goal six yards out, and the deficit was halved. In their next attack the home team drew level, after a cutback from the byline again down the Cadiz right was not dealt with, and Diego Castro finished well into the bottom right corner. With the first half coming to an end there was still time for a change to the scores. Barral and Castro combined well on the edge of the area, and when Armando could only push the shot from Castro away it fell to Geraldo to give the home side the lead. With the halftime whistle about to be blown a piece of magic from De Paula down the left allowed him to get to the byline, and as he drew the keeper he laid back for Jonathan Sesma to equalise, this time finishing with his stronger left foot.
The problems on Saturday with the defending have cost Cadiz numerous points all season, and what is surprising is that with the exception of Caneda, regulars Armando, De Quintana, Paz, Raul Lopez and even midfield linchpins Bezares and Fleurquin were all important members of the 2004/05 promotion team which was so solid in defence. Even in last years primera liga campaign the defence was very rarely battered as it has been already this year at Albacete and Gijon especially. Hopefully the change of manager will see some freshness in the team, as too many players aren’t performing to levels that the fans know they can reach, and unfortunately Oli paid the ultimate price.
