Esparrago started his favoured eleven, but unfortunately his team lost in the Calderon. The match was brought forward and played on 27th October, to allow Spain more time to prepare for their world cup play-off against Slovakia.

With many of the players those that featured in last seasons promotion, a few of the players seemed to suffer from their lack of Primera Liga action, and despite the heavy score-line, only a couple of flashes of brilliance from Madrids star players won the game for the home team, who were outplayed for much of the game.

Despite having the ball for long periods, Cadiz looked as though they didn’t believe they could ever win in the Calderon, and often hesitated in the final third of the pitch. In the early exchanges the Cadiz defence struggled with the pace of both Kezman and especially Petrov. After surviving the initial 15 minutes, Cadiz seemed to settle and started passing the ball better, with Enrique and Pavoni putting some dangerous crosses in which unfortunately failed to carve out a clear cut opening. As the home fans grew impatient, Antonio Lopez peeled off his marker and bundled his way much too easily through the defence. As he approached the goal, he rolled the ball to Maxi to tap into an empty net. From gaining control of the match, a lapse in defence had meant Cadiz were 1-0 down and the home fans were rejuvinated. Cadiz continued to have possession though, and in the 40th minute they converted it to a chance. Firstly Enrique almost found Oli at the far post, but the ball was cleared from a corner. Then, as the corner came in, Paz looked to have equalized but his header went millimetres wide.

At the start of the second half the match continued with Cadiz again having the majority of the ball, but not creating any chances. As the home team sucked up the pressure, they countered through Maxi. He was superbly denied by Armando, but from the resulting corner Pablo’s powerful header doubled Atleticos lead. As the game petered out towards the end, Galleti took advantage of some poor defending to put an unfair look to the score-line as he made it 3-0.

Cadiz fans can take some good things from this match, but unfortunately some basic defensive errors and a lack of idea’s prevented their side from picking up at least a point from a tricky away fixture.
