After collecting two points from a possible nine available from their last three home league games Cadiz earned a much needed three points over fellow underachievers Numancia in the Carranza.

Without the suspended Raul Lopez, Oli continued to leave out of favour Vella out of the squad, Velazquez on the bench, and started local youngster Lucas on the left of defence. Fleurquin partnered Garcia in the heart of the midfield with Nano, Sesma and Acuna behind De Paula.

Cadiz released much of the tension inside the ground with the opening goal after 13 minutes. De Paula looked to the referee for a penalty as he was brought down by the keeper, but the referee turned down the appeals. As panic and confusion continued amongst the defence Sesma headed the loose ball back across goal to Nano who headed into an empty net as Juan Pablo was still out of position. 18,000 fans breathed a sigh of relief as they hoped to see their team win at home for the first league game since the opening day against Vecindario. They were further helped in the 24th minute when Sergio Boris was sent off for his second yellow card after a foul on Acuna. Numancia didn’t fold though and even with ten men still looked to be dangerous on the break, especially Del Pino who had two efforts. Cadiz also came close to extending their lead, when firstly Nano’s promising cross was punched clear and then De Paula headed over after fine work by Sesma on the right wing.

The second half continued in much the same way, with Cadiz trying to pass the ball through midfield whilst the visitors looked for the long ball up to Bolo. Sesma then broke free at the other end but when faced one on one with the keeper he blasted the ball at Juan Pablo’s legs. Then in the 63rd minute Del Pino had a good chance but Armando pushed the ball wide for a corner. After replacing Nano, Enrique did well and fed Sesma who passed to De Paula who’s shot was well saved. Sesma himself then should have wrapped up the points with a quarter of an hour to go after he was put through by Lucas, but as the fans celebrated the goal Sesma blasted the ball high over the bar. Cadiz used their experience and closed out the game without too much concern, except for a last minute shot that scraped the top of the Cadiz bar. Prior to that the Numancia manager was also sent to the stands for complaining that Armando was taking too long over a goal kick.

The win was a big boost for Cadiz as a loss would have seen them slip into the relegation zone, but another good performance at Sporting Gijon next week could mean that the season is finally starting to get going for Los Amarillos
