In
this second leg of the first fase for promotion to the Segunda A the only change
to the starting line up is the enforced one with Cifuentes replacing the still
injured Raul Lopez. In a damp and dreary Stadium Gal in Irun, which is up on the
northern coast of Spain not far from Bilbao, the second and crucial leg of the
first promotion fase took place tonight with Cadiz holding that one goal
advantage from their victory last week. From the first whistle the strong Real
Union team were quick out of the blocks chasing everything and closing the Cadiz
players down very swiftly but it was all a bit too speedy and was rather scrappy
with not much good football being played. Gradually however los amarillos
started passing the ball around well and had the first shot at goal in the
seventh minute when Ormazabal fired a left footer away but he dragged it well
wide of the mark. Within the next five minutes another couple of half chances
fell to Mansilla, who headed over from a corner, and Lopez Silva who also fired
well wide of the goal after a quick break by Cadiz. Then in the fourteenth
minute a dangerous break by the home side ended with the ball at the feet of
Goikoetxea who turned in the area and fired the ball across goal but thankfully
it was wide of the goal and it remained all square in Irun. A couple of minutes
later and Enrique had the ball in the net after good work by Caballero but the
Cadiz right winger was offside and the 'goal' was rightly ruled out. Near the
half hour mark a great passage of play through the Cadiz midfield ended with
Enrique putting in a good cross into the box but it was too close to Otermin,
the Real Union keeper, who easily caught the ball. A minute later and at the
other end the ball was played behind Cristian to a Real Union player on the edge
of the area but the Cadiz right back was quick to get back and foil the break.
Shortly after that bit of danger a shot along the ground through the crowded
Cadiz box went through to Casilla who had no trouble in dropping to collect the
effort. The Cadiz keeper had to collect a similar hopeful shot several minutes
later before Cadiz broke well through the midfield with some crisp passing and
running off the ball which allowed Lopez Silva to pick up the ball in some space
and he tried to curl a right footed shot towards the far post but the effort was
deflected wide for a corner. From the subsequent corner Mansilla managed to get
his head to the ball but his effort was too high and flew well over the bar. A
minute after that chance the ball was down the Real Union right wing and was
fired low across the Cadiz goalmouth where it cannoned into the legs of
Goikoetxea, who could do nothing but see the ball bounce behind when the ball
could have gone anywhere. In the last few minutes before half time Toedtli had a
powerful goalbound header well blocked by a defender and at the other end the
Real Union number 7 fired a shot high of the mark. On the stroke of half time a
big shout for a penalty from the home side when Cifuentes collided with Abasolo,
who went down in the box, but the Real Union player had already been flagged
offside and so the half ended as it had started with Cadiz still looking good
for promotion.
Six
minutes into the second half and a good move down the Cadiz left found Lopez
Silva trying a left foot shot from a difficult angle but he pulled it wide of
the mark. A few minutes later and the heavens opened in Irun with hail and rain
slashing down in a strong wind that came with it making playing conditions very
difficult indeed. Within seconds of the change in the weather Casilla was called
into action when he made a super double save from efforts by Abasolo and
Dominguez that kept los amarillo all square and ahead over the two legs. So
fierce was the down pour that within five minutes there was surface water all
over the pitch making the playing conditions treacherous and unpredictable with
the ball sometimes skidding over the surface and on other times holding up in
the water. In the 68th minute a rushed kick out by Otermin went straight to
Lopez Silva, who saw that the keeper was well off his line and fired in a good
long shot from more than 30 yards out that was heading for the goal but the Real
Union keeper had managed to get back and caught the effort a yard from the line.
In the 75th minute a good shot from just outside the area by Dominguez was just
high of the Cadiz goal, although Casilla looked to have it covered if it had
been on target. Just three minutes from the end of normal time Cadiz were
awarded a free kick just outside the Real Union box which Ormazabal took,
forcing Otermin to pull off a good save by tipping the ball over the bar. In the
final minute of normal time Casilla again had to drop onto a low shot before the
referee showed two pretty ridiculous yellow cards to Cifuentes in fairly quick
succession to reduce Cadiz to ten men for the final two minutes of time added
on, which they did pulling off the draw that gave them the victory over the two
legs gaining them promotion back to the Segunda A at the first attempt after
just one season in the dreaded Segunda B.
The final whistle was the signal for the thousand or so cadistas who had made
the long journey to Irun to run onto the pitch to celebrate with their team,
whilst back in the Carranza the 11,000 cadistas who had gone to watch the match
on the big screens in the stadium also let their feelings loose rejoicing on the
pitch to cries of ' A Segunda oe, A Segunda oe...'.
